A cat has a fever when a thermometer reads above the normal range of roughly 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C), according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Nothing else confirms it. A warm nose, warm ears or a withdrawn mood can’t tell you. Fever has many possible causes, from infection to immune disease to cancer, and finding the cause is a veterinary job. Never give a cat human fever medicine such as acetaminophen or aspirin unless a vet tells you to.

What temperature counts as a fever in a cat?

VCA gives a normal range of 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C) for dogs and cats. The MSD Veterinary Manual says true fever is commonly reported at 103–106°F (39.5–41.1°C).

Reading What it means Source
100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C) Normal range VCA Animal Hospitals
Above 102.5°F (39.2°C) Elevated. Let the cat rest 10 minutes and recheck, because agitation can falsely raise a reading. VCA Animal Hospitals
103–106°F (39.5–41.1°C) Range commonly reported for true fever MSD Veterinary Manual
Above 104°F (40°C) or below 99°F (37.2°C) Emergency VCA Animal Hospitals

Fever of unknown origin (FUO) has its own definition. VCA describes it as a temperature above 103.5°F (39.7°C) lasting more than a few days with no obvious cause after history and examination. That is a diagnostic label for vets. It is not a rule that you should wait days before calling.

How can you tell if your cat has a fever?

You have to measure it. VCA’s guidance says these signs occur with many medical problems, so “it is not possible for you to determine if your pet is hypothermic or hyperthermic just by looking at them; you must take their temperature.”

Signs that can accompany fever

  • Lethargy and reluctance to move
  • Loss of appetite
  • Faster breathing and heart rate
  • Dehydration
  • Shivering
  • Stiffness

VCA lists these for fever, but none is specific to it. A cat with any of them is unwell whatever its temperature, so don’t wait for a reading before calling the vet.

Taking a temperature safely

  • Use a digital thermometer made for the purpose. VCA describes a digital ear technique.
  • Ear infection can make an ear reading slightly inaccurate, according to VCA.
  • Do not force the thermometer if your cat resists. VCA advises leaving difficult measurements to trained professionals.
  • If the reading is high, let the cat rest for 10 minutes and recheck.

A home reading only tells you the temperature. It does not tell you why it is abnormal.

Fever or heatstroke?

The two look alike but work differently, and they need opposite handling.

True fever

The MSD Veterinary Manual explains that pyrogens and inflammatory signals reset the hypothalamus, the brain’s thermostat, to a higher set point. The body is deliberately running hot. Cooling measures such as water baths can work against that regulated response, so don’t try to cool a cat with fever at home. Call a vet.

Hyperthermia and heatstroke

Heatstroke, seizures and malignant hyperthermia raise body temperature without resetting the thermostat. MSD classes them as hyperthermia, and severe cases can reach or exceed 106°F (41.1°C). Cornell Feline Health Center lists weakness or collapse, excessive panting, drooling, vomiting and diarrhea as heatstroke signs. Its advice is to move the cat to a cool area, gently wet the fur with cool (not very cold) water, and contact a veterinarian immediately.

What causes fever in cats?

The MSD Veterinary Manual and VCA list infection, inflammation, immune-mediated disease, cancer and medication reactions. MSD says infection is the most common cause in cats.

Infections

VCA lists viral infections including FeLV, FIV, FIP, panleukopenia, herpesvirus and calicivirus. Bacterial infections can follow wounds or involve organs and body cavities. Fever alone does not identify which infection is present.

  • Respiratory disease: MSD lists fever alongside sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis and oral signs in feline respiratory disease complex.
  • Panleukopenia: Cornell lists fever among its signs. It stresses veterinary care, plus isolation and hygiene measures while the disease is managed.

What one case series found

The MSD Veterinary Manual reports a 2017 case series of 106 cats with fever. It is one series, not an estimate for all cats.

How vets diagnose the cause

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, the vet starts with a history and physical exam, which may include eye and neurologic checks. Details that help:

  • Vaccination and parasite-control status
  • Travel
  • Medications and the response to earlier treatment
  • Wounds or trauma
  • Illness in other animals or people

Initial tests may include a CBC and other blood work (including FeLV/FIV testing), urinalysis, urine culture, and chest and abdominal radiographs. Findings then guide what follows:

  • Repeat examinations
  • Further infectious-disease tests and blood cultures
  • Thyroid tests
  • Ultrasound
  • Cytology, aspiration or biopsy
  • Fluid analysis and cultures
  • CT or MRI
  • Exploratory surgery

Persistent or recurrent fever can take time to work up, because decisions are made in stages. As the case series shows, some cats never get a diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. Supportive care can include fluids and keeping up water and food intake. Therapy may target a confirmed infection or another underlying disease. When no cause is found, the vet may consider a trial therapy with careful monitoring.

Do not give human fever medicine

VCA warns that aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) are extremely toxic to cats. Never give them without explicit veterinary direction.
