Yes. Guinea pigs can eat plain rocket (arugula) as one of several fresh greens. SPCA New Zealand lists rocket among safe greens, and the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital lists arugula among good vegetable choices. It is a side player, though. Hay comes first, and rocket does not cover vitamin C.
Why rocket is a reasonable green
NC State’s veterinary nutrition guide, “Caring for Your Pet Guinea Pig”, rates arugula low in both calcium and oxalates. The same guide suggests building the salad mainly from lower-calcium, lower-oxalate greens and rotating higher-calcium ones in smaller amounts. Rocket fits the base group. Neither rocket nor arugula is described as toxic in any of the veterinary or welfare sources reviewed.
Calcium and oxalate content is only one way to compare greens. Vitamin C contribution is another, and a green can score well on one and not the other. None of these categories tells you the safe portion for an individual animal.
Where rocket fits in the whole diet
Hay is the foundation
Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service (“Caring for a guinea pig”, updated 13 January 2026) recommends that adults get approximately 80% of their diet as high-fiber, low-calcium grass hay, plus some fresh vegetables and a small amount of pellets. SPCA New Zealand likewise advises at least 80% good-quality hay or grass, with constant access and about a teacup of fresh greens a day. Those are general diet guides, not rocket-specific servings. Rocket never replaces hay.

Vitamin C needs a separate plan
Guinea pigs cannot make enough vitamin C. In the Singapore AVS’s words, “Guinea pigs require vitamin C from vegetable sources or supplements.” The University of Florida and NC State guides both highlight bell pepper as a practical source. Treat rocket as part of the variety in the bowl, not as your vitamin C solution.
How much and how often?
No source reviewed gives a validated portion or frequency for rocket specifically, and no feeding trial on it was found. The honest approach is to count it toward the daily teacup-sized serving of mixed greens from SPCA New Zealand, alongside other low-calcium leaves and a vitamin C vegetable. Rotating several greens avoids relying on any single one.

Preparing and introducing it
- Wash the leaves before serving.
- Serve them plain, with no dressing, oil, seasoning or other human salad additions.
- Offer a small amount the first time. Sudden diet changes can upset digestion.
- Watch appetite and droppings over the next day or so before increasing the amount.
- Remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils.
When to check with a vet first
The Royal Veterinary College’s urolithiasis diet factsheet (2021) includes rocket among the foods to account for in a calcium-aware diet. Sources categorise greens differently, and clinical needs vary. If your guinea pig has bladder stones, other urinary disease or digestive problems, ask your veterinarian about rocket instead of applying a general rule.
