Guinea pigs can eat a wide range of washed vegetables, and daily variety is the goal. Good routine choices named by veterinary and welfare sources include bell pepper, romaine and leaf lettuce, cucumber, parsley, cilantro, collard greens, beet greens and some brassicas such as broccoli. Vegetables sit alongside unlimited grass hay and a measured portion of guinea pig-specific pellets. They never replace either.

Where vegetables fit in the daily diet

The Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals describe the same base diet. It is unlimited good-quality grass hay (timothy or another low-calcium hay), a smaller amount of commercial high-fiber, timothy-based pellets, fresh water, and a variety of leafy greens and vegetables that includes vitamin C-rich foods. The RSPCA’s guidance follows the same pattern and adds that vegetables and herbs should be rotated.

Vegetables matter mostly for two reasons: they add variety, and they supply vitamin C, which guinea pigs cannot make themselves.

Vegetables to offer

Food How veterinary and welfare sources frame it Practical use
Bell pepper A regular vegetable and a vitamin C source in Merck, VCA and RSPCA guidance. A strong vitamin C-forward choice for the rotation.
Romaine and leaf lettuce Suitable for regular feeding per VCA and RSPCA. VCA advises against iceberg or head lettuce as a low-value choice. Lettuce types are not equivalent. Choose darker, looser leaves over pale, tight heads.
Cucumber Listed by the RSPCA among examples for regular rotation. A fine rotation item, but not a vitamin C centerpiece.
Parsley Named as a vitamin C source. Useful as a herb or green in the mix.
Cilantro, collard greens, beet greens Appear in veterinary lists of suitable greens. Rotate them rather than relying on one green.
Broccoli and cauliflower Listed by veterinary sources as options or vitamin C sources. Include as rotation items. The sources give no ideal portion.

When choosing, weigh vitamin C contribution, how often an item suits regular feeding, variety, and whether your guinea pig accepts and tolerates it. Calcium and oxalate matter too. VCA’s pet-care guidance says leafy greens should be lower in calcium or oxalates to help prevent urinary stones. The sources do not give a complete per-vegetable calcium or oxalate comparison, so no ranking is offered here. If your guinea pig has had bladder stones, ask your vet which greens to favor or limit.

Vitamin C: what the sources say

Guinea pigs need dietary vitamin C. The two veterinary sources state the requirement differently, so the figures should not be blended:

  • Merck Veterinary Manual (professional page): 10–25 mg/kg daily for adults, and 30 mg/kg or more for growing, pregnant, lactating or ill animals.
  • VCA: a broader range of 10–50 mg per day, depending on the individual animal’s condition.

Both name vitamin C-fortified guinea pig pellets and fresh vegetables as sources. Neither endorses adding vitamin C to drinking water as a default. Merck and VCA note stability and taste problems, since a guinea pig may drink less if the water tastes different. Ask your veterinarian before starting any supplement.

How much to feed

Quantities differ by source, and each is a general guide rather than an individual prescription:

  • Merck’s professional page: hay in body-size quantities, about 1–2 teaspoons of pellets and 1–2 cups of fresh produce daily for adults, emphasizing vitamin C-rich choices.
  • Merck’s pet-owner page (reviewed October 2025): about 2 tablespoons of pellets, with vegetables offered daily.

Age, lifestyle and health all change the right amount. Growing, pregnant and lactating guinea pigs may need different diets, so ask your vet about them.

Variety may help. A 2025 study by Dadah and colleagues in the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine looked at clinical urolithiasis in pet guinea pigs. As reported on the Merck page, animals offered 7–10 or more than 10 types of produce were significantly less likely to develop uroliths. This is an association, not proof that variety prevents stones.

Introducing new vegetables

  1. Add one new item at a time. VCA notes that guinea pigs form food preferences early and can resist changes in food type or presentation, so go gradually.
  2. Start with a small piece and watch appetite and droppings over the following day or so.
  3. Wash all produce before serving.
  4. Rotate. The RSPCA advises varying vegetables and herbs across the week and keeping an eye on food intake, water intake and droppings.
  5. Call a vet if your guinea pig stops eating or seems unwell. A drop in appetite in this species should not be left to resolve on its own.

What to limit or avoid

  • Iceberg or head lettuce: VCA treats it as a low-value choice.
  • Fruit and sugary foods: fruit is high in sugar, so keep portions small and occasional.
  • Seeds, nuts and dry cereals: VCA identifies these as unsuitable.

The sources reviewed do not provide an exhaustive list of unsafe vegetables. If a food is not named as suitable above, check with your veterinarian before offering it.
