Tiny bright-orange dots on a dog may be harvest mite larvae, especially after walks through vegetation in dry, sunny weather in late summer or autumn. Check the feet, legs, ears, head and underside. The dots are a clue, not a diagnosis: itching and redness can have other causes, so contact your veterinarian if your dog has sore skin, persistent or intense itching, or you suspect mites.
What are the tiny orange dots on a dog?
They may be harvest mite larvae, the parasitic stage of trombiculid mites. ESCCAP describes larvae of Neotrombicula autumnalis as bright orange and approximately 0.2–0.3 mm long. They can often be seen without magnification.
In temperate climates, larvae are commonly active in dry, sunny conditions between July and October, though timing varies by climate and location. They wait on vegetation for an animal to pass, so a recent walk through countryside or other vegetation can be a useful clue. Season, exposure and visible larvae can help a veterinarian assess the possibility; none alone confirms that mites are responsible for every skin problem. ESCCAP’s 2023 ectoparasite guideline describes their appearance and seasonal activity.
Where should you check?
Look for orange specks and irritated skin where mites may contact the dog, particularly the head, ears, legs, feet and underside. Pennard Vets also highlights the armpits, groin and genital area.

A dog affected by harvest mites may scratch, lick or nibble at the skin. Hair loss, sparse or discoloured fur, discharge or an unpleasant odour can occur with more advanced or complicated irritation. These signs are not specific to mites. Pennard Vets’ overview also lists allergies, fleas and skin infections as possible causes of itch or sore skin.
How can you tell whether mites are likely?
Use the pattern as context, not as a home diagnosis. The combination of visible orange larvae, a walk through vegetation during the local active season, and irritation on contact areas makes harvest mites a possibility. If there are no visible mites, the timing or distribution is different, or the skin problem persists, other explanations still need consideration.

| Observation | What it may suggest | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Bright-orange specks on the coat or skin | Harvest mite larvae are one possibility; ESCCAP describes them as bright orange and 0.2–0.3 mm long. | That mites explain the dog’s symptoms or that there is no other skin condition. |
| Signs after outdoor exposure in dry, sunny late-summer or autumn conditions | The timing and exposure can fit harvest mite activity in temperate climates, typically July–October according to ESCCAP (2023). | That every region follows the same calendar or that exposure alone confirms infestation. |
| Itching or redness without visible larvae | A skin problem that merits attention, particularly if it is persistent or intense. | Harvest mites specifically; allergies, fleas and skin infections can also cause problems. |
Repeated infestations can trigger severe hypersensitivity reactions, according to ESCCAP. A veterinarian can examine the dog and advise whether mites or another cause best fits the signs.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange veterinary advice if your dog has sore skin, persistent or intense itching, or suspected mites. Seek advice as well if irritation is worsening or there is hair loss, discharge or an unpleasant odour. Because several conditions can look similar, do not treat a suspected mite problem as confirmed solely from paw-licking, redness or the time of year.

The presence of harvest mites also does not prove that they caused Seasonal Canine Illness. Vet Help Direct says the relationship is uncertain; a mite finding alone does not establish causation. Vet Help Direct’s discussion of Seasonal Canine Illness explains this distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How are harvest mites treated and prevented?
Treatment should be chosen with a veterinarian, because the appropriate option depends on the dog and on product licensing in your country. ESCCAP’s European guidance lists fipronil for dogs and cats, synthetic pyrethroids for dogs, and selamectin among substances that can be used against harvest mites. It also discusses topical sprays that may be repeated at intervals, treatment of commonly affected areas, and palliative care to reduce local irritation. These are guideline details, not directions to use a particular product or to medicate a dog without veterinary advice.
