The best food for a Cane Corso is a complete and balanced diet that matches the dog’s life stage, in an amount that keeps the dog lean. For a puppy, that means a label saying the food is formulated for growth, including growth of large-sized dogs. For an adult, it means a food labeled for adult maintenance. No named formula is best for every Cane Corso, and the sources behind this guide don’t include controlled comparisons of specific brands. What they do support is a set of label checks and feeding rules that work for any brand.
What to look for on the bag
The most useful part of a dog food package is the nutritional adequacy statement. AAFCO’s consumer guidance calls it “usually found in small print on the back or side of pet food packaging” and “the key to meeting your pet’s nutritional needs.” It tells you which life stage the food is complete and balanced for. Growth and adult maintenance have different nutrient requirements, which is why the two aren’t interchangeable.
The FDA explains how a “complete and balanced” claim is earned. The food must either meet an AAFCO dog food nutrient profile (the profiles were last updated in 2016, per the FDA page) or pass a feeding trial run under AAFCO procedures. AAFCO does not approve or endorse brands. The statement only tells you how the manufacturer substantiated the claim.

Choose a large-breed growth formula
Purina’s Cane Corso guide (a manufacturer-published source) states: “It is important for Cane Corso puppies to eat foods made for large-breed puppies.” It explains the label language to check: the adequacy statement should cover growth of large-sized dogs, meaning dogs of 70 lb or more as adults. Don’t rely on a picture of a big dog or the words “large breed” on the front of the bag. Read the small print.

Keep the puppy lean
The 2021 AAHA guidance on life-stage nutrition says large- and giant-breed puppies should be kept lean and should avoid excessive calcium intake. Don’t add calcium supplements to a complete diet unless your veterinarian tells you to. A chubby puppy isn’t a healthy one. Aim for a visible waist and ribs you can feel without pressing hard, and ask your vet to score your puppy’s body condition at checkups.
Meal frequency
Purina suggests three meals a day until roughly 5–6 months, then two. PetMD says puppies generally eat three to four times daily. Treat these as starting routines. Smaller, more frequent meals suit young puppies, and your vet can adjust the schedule for your dog.

Cane Corso adult food
Once your dog is mature, switch to a food whose statement says adult maintenance, unless your vet has prescribed a therapeutic diet for a health condition. Purina notes that puppy food can be higher in calories and may lead a less active adult to gain weight. Extra weight is a particular concern for a heavy, large-framed breed.

These are general estimates, not individual thresholds. Ask your veterinarian to assess your dog’s growth and body condition before you change foods. Then switch gradually rather than overnight.
How much to feed
No cup amount fits every Cane Corso. AAFCO describes package feeding directions as guidelines that may need revising for the animal’s condition and activity. A practical approach:

- Start with the amount on the bag for your dog’s current or expected weight.
- Check body condition every few weeks, and weigh your puppy regularly.
- Reduce portions if your dog is gaining too fast or losing its waistline. Increase them if it’s too thin.
- Count treats and chews toward the daily total.
- Review the plan with your vet at each checkup, especially during growth.
Cups can’t be compared between foods, because calorie density differs. Two bags may need very different volumes to deliver the same energy.

Bloat risk and mealtime habits
PetMD notes that deep-chested large breeds can develop gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening emergency. It suggests smaller meals and avoiding exercise right before or after eating, and it cautions against elevated bowls. Warning signs include rapid abdominal swelling and unproductive retching. If you see them, go to an emergency veterinarian immediately.
