Door sounds, an arriving person, activity at home, or earlier experiences could have become familiar cues; none is established as this dog’s motive. The available evidence supports learning from some human and door-related cues, not a claim that dogs recognize or predict package deliveries.
Why might a dog run to a package?
There is no account of this dog’s history or the circumstances around the delivery, so its reason for approaching the box is unknown. A dog could have learned that certain sounds or activity near the entrance often precede an interesting event. It might also be responding to the arrival itself or to something it has experienced around deliveries before. These are plausible possibilities, not a diagnosis of this dog’s behavior.
Veterinary behavior guidance describes dogs forming an association between a doorbell and a visitor. That makes learned door-related cues a reasonable explanation for a rush toward the entrance, but it does not show that a dog recognizes a parcel or knows a delivery is on the way. VCA’s guidance on barking and jumping at the door discusses delivery-person triggers and ways to train a calmer response.
What does research say about dogs reading human cues?
In a 2014 experiment, Federico Rossano, Marie Nitzschner, and Michael Tomasello tested dogs’ responses to human voice direction around two boxes. Dogs followed an excited human voice pointing them toward the baited box; control studies considered whether smell alone could explain their choices. The authors concluded that dogs’ communication skills were multimodal and flexible, not based on visual cues alone. They wrote: “These results suggest that domestic dogs’ skills in comprehending human communication are not based on visual cues alone, but are instead multi-modal and highly flexible.” The study tested communication in a specific task, not package recognition or delivery anticipation. Does this show that dogs can predict a delivery?
No. A dog arriving at a package does not, by itself, establish that it foresaw the delivery. A historical 2000 paper by Rupert Sheldrake and Pamela Smart describes videotaped observations and experiments involving Jaytee, a dog said to anticipate his owner’s return. The authors report that Jaytee was at a window 4 percent of the time during the main period of absence and 55 percent when the owner was returning in randomly timed videotaped experiments. Those figures are the authors’ results in a specific, contested study of owner-return behavior—not evidence about packages. The paper itself discusses conventional alternatives such as hearing or smelling the person approach, routine timing, subtle cues from people at home, and selective memory. Read the paper.
How can you manage a dog that rushes the door?
If a dog gets excited when a delivery person approaches, teaching a calm alternative can make the entrance easier to manage. VCA describes training a dog to go to a mat several feet from the door and rewarding that behavior. Practice when the dog is calm, and manage access to the entrance while training is incomplete; a mat is an option to teach, not a guaranteed solution for every dog.
