The Small Changes That Could Explain Why Your Dog Is Slowing Down

A change in your dog’s pace may be subtle, but it is worth noticing. Track changes in movement and behavior, then discuss them with your veterinarian.

If your dog is moving more slowly, taking longer to get up, or losing interest in walks, the change may be related to age—but age alone does not explain what is happening. Pain and other health changes can look subtle at first. Compare your dog with their usual habits, note what has changed, and talk with your veterinarian rather than assuming a new slowdown is normal.

Why a dog may start slowing down

Reduced activity can accompany aging, but it can also reflect pain or another physical, metabolic, cognitive, or sensory change. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) cautions that chronic pain may be mistaken for normal aging. A senior dog’s behavior or mobility change is a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis.

Osteoarthritis is one possible cause of stiffness or reluctance to move, but slowing down by itself does not establish arthritis. Osteoarthritis can occur at any age, and a veterinarian assesses a dog using an examination and observations such as gait and posture. See Cornell’s overview of osteoarthritis.

Small changes worth noticing

Look for differences from your dog’s own baseline. A gradual change may be easier to spot in everyday routines than in one dramatic symptom.

  • Getting up and settling: taking longer to rise, appearing stiff after resting, or struggling to find a comfortable position.
  • Walking and play: shorter walks, less stamina, less interest in play, limping, or a change in the way your dog walks or turns.
  • Moving around the home: hesitation before stairs or jumps, avoiding slippery floors, or lying down to eat or drink.
  • Behavior and routine: altered sleep or appetite, withdrawing from people or other pets, unusual irritability, or increased sensitivity to touch.

These signs can be associated with pain, but they are not specific enough to identify the cause at home. VCA Animal Hospitals’ guide to recognizing pain in aging dogs and Cornell’s guide to recognizing pain in dogs describe mobility and behavior changes owners may observe.

How to make your observations useful to the vet

Keep a simple dated note of what you see. Include when the change began, whether it is steady or comes and goes, and which activities seem harder. Record related changes in eating, drinking, play, urination or defecation, attitude, grooming, vision, or hearing. A broad history helps the veterinary team interpret mobility changes; AAHA’s guidance on evaluating senior pets emphasizes gathering this kind of information.

If it is safe and does not require making your dog perform, take short videos of ordinary movement: getting up, walking, turning, or navigating a familiar area. AAHA notes that videos of movement and interaction at home can help assess changes and monitor response to care. Do not force a walk, jump, or other activity to get footage. Bring your notes and videos to the appointment.

When to contact a veterinarian

Contact your veterinarian about a noticeable, persistent, or worsening change, especially if it comes with changes in appetite, drinking, urination, or general wellbeing. Seek veterinary advice promptly for marked discomfort or a sudden inability to bear weight. If you are unsure how quickly your dog needs attention, call a veterinary professional for guidance; the signs described here do not create a single urgency rule that fits every dog.

Home changes that may make movement easier

While the cause is being assessed, practical adjustments may help your dog reach familiar places or move with better footing. They are supports, not treatment or a substitute for veterinary advice. The right choice depends on the task, your dog’s size and confidence, the layout and stability of your home, and whether your veterinary team considers it suitable.
