Saint’s story is a reported account of a severely emaciated pit bull who was taken in as a hospice foster and began responding to care. According to iHeartDogs, he started engaging with his foster family’s dogs within about two weeks; later, he ate rotisserie chicken when he had struggled to eat and made progress after surgery. The available account does not verify his eventual outcome or identify his diagnosis or procedure.
How Saint was found and placed in hospice foster care
In its October 3, 2023 story, iHeartDogs reported that Saint was found in a homeless encampment with little food and no veterinary care. The article described him as severely emaciated and weak, unable to stand to go to the bathroom, and affected by parasites. Those details are part of the published account; medical records are not available to independently confirm them. Read the iHeartDogs account.
The story says caregivers did not expect Saint to survive and placed him with Heather as a hospice foster. Heather reportedly knew he might die in her care. During his first week, he was withdrawn and had never been inside a house.
What changed during Saint’s time with Heather
According to the article, Saint began interacting with Heather’s other dogs and walking into the family room within about two weeks. That early change was social; the story does not establish that he was medically recovered at that point.

The account also describes difficulty getting Saint to eat enough. Heather reportedly tried different ways to encourage him and offered rotisserie chicken, which he ate eagerly. After surgery, he reportedly stayed full after meals and became more active. The story does not specify the surgery, the underlying diagnosis, his diet, or his veterinarian’s instructions.
What the story does—and does not—say about feeding a rescued dog
Saint’s acceptance of rotisserie chicken is an anecdote about one dog, not a treatment recommendation. It does not establish that chicken is appropriate for another dog who will not eat, or that it is nutritionally complete. A rescued dog who is weak, severely underweight, or refusing food needs assessment and feeding guidance from a veterinarian; this story does not provide a diet plan or a substitute for that advice.
