Nearly three-quarters said they opposed or were unsure about venomous European asp snakes and spotted hyenas. The results suggest attitudes depend on the species, but they are exploratory—not a national vote or a plan to release animals.
What did the survey find?
A University of Sheffield-led paper published in Sustainability in March 2026 included a short online questionnaire. A Phys.org report dated October 5, 2026, says it drew more than 250 UK residents. The paper reports that more than 50% favoured using urban landscapes to conserve small non-native animals, including tortoises and bee-eaters. Phys.org’s report gives further examples:
| Proposal | Reported response |
|---|---|
| Mediterranean-style planting | 60%–70% approved, according to the Sheffield findings as reported by Phys.org. |
| Hermann’s tortoises and northern carmine bee-eaters | More than half said they would be happy to see them in local parks, according to Phys.org. |
| Zebras | More than 40% were broadly open to the idea; that is not the same as majority approval. |
| Spotted hyenas and venomous European asp snakes | Nearly three-quarters said no or were unsure, according to Phys.org. |
The figures do not establish a definitive ranking of species: the available summaries do not reproduce the full questionnaire wording or item-by-item response breakdown. They do show a contrast between relatively favourable responses to planting and smaller animals and greater hesitation about a venomous snake and a large predator.
Why consider moving wildlife?
The paper discusses assisted migration: people deliberately helping species move to places expected to offer more suitable climates in the future. Climate change can make a species’ current habitat less suitable, while natural movement may not happen quickly enough. The authors propose that parks and gardens could be small, intensively managed places to explore the idea and monitor selected species. Their history of hosting non-native plants offers context for the discussion, not evidence that introducing non-native animals is safe. The paper in Sustainability presents this as a possibility for investigation, not an active release programme.

What the survey cannot tell us
The questionnaire offers an early indication of attitudes among its respondents; it does not show that the whole UK population supports the idea. The paper describes the survey as short and the sample as relatively small, and calls for larger studies with broader demographic recruitment. Nor does approval in a questionnaire demonstrate that a proposed introduction would be ecologically safe, practical or acceptable as policy.
The authors identify substantial questions before any real-world action: effects on native species and ecosystems, costs, available land, sustainable populations, and consequences for agriculture and other land uses. They also raise ethical questions, including what happens to populations remaining in their original ranges. Public and governmental support, alongside careful assessment, would be needed before implementation.

Is anything about to be released into UK parks?
No. The paper explores a hypothetical conservation approach and asks whether it merits further study. It does not announce an approved scheme to put tortoises, zebras, hyenas or other exotic animals in public parks. Ross Cameron, the University of Sheffield professor of horticulture who led the research, told Phys.org: “We expected people to be fairly resistant to the idea of exotic, nonnative animals in their local park. But people seem to understand that the natural world is under pressure and that we may need to do things differently.” That is Cameron’s interpretation of the responses, not a separate survey finding.
