Hewey, a dog Red Dog Farm says it helped rescue during Hurricane Helene in 2024, has a permanent home with the person who first took him in as a foster. Kacie formally adopted him after months of veterinary care and adoption events, according to a report updated October 6, 2026.
Hewey’s journey from rescue to adoption
Rescued during Hurricane Helene
Red Dog Farm said Hewey was among the animals it helped rescue from Hurricane Helene in 2024, amid flooding in North Carolina. “In 2024, Hewey was one of the many animals that we helped rescue from Hurricane Helene. Shortly after his arrival, Kacie volunteered to foster him,” the rescue said in an account reproduced by WGHP, published via AOL.
Foster care and a long search for a home
Red Dog Farm described Hewey as older and said he had medical issues. The rescue worked with veterinarians at Sedgefield Animal Hospital to get him healthy. The report does not specify his age, diagnosis or treatment.
While Hewey stayed with Kacie and her other dog, he attended adoption events for months. Red Dog Farm said he was repeatedly passed over, though he was happy in Kacie’s home. She eventually made the foster placement permanent, formally adopting him that weekend, according to the report.
