Guinness identifies him as the tallest horse ever documented. Its account says he was four when measured, though the evidence available for the figure is retrospective rather than a located 1850 measurement record.
How tall was Sampson, later called Mammoth?
Guinness World Records gives Sampson’s height as 21.25 hands, equivalent to 2.19 m or 7 ft 2.5 in. The record page dates the measurement to 1850; Guinness’ 2026 account says he was four years old at the time. Guinness lists him in the historical category of tallest horse ever documented. Guinness World Records’ tallest-horse record and its 2026 account of the living-horse record provide those details.
Who was Sampson?
Sampson was a Shire gelding bred by Thomas Cleaver at Toddington Mills in Bedfordshire, England. He was foaled in 1846 and later renamed Mammoth, according to Guinness World Records. The breed is an English working draught horse; Guinness says mature Shire stallions stand 17 hands or taller. That breed context helps convey the scale of Sampson’s reported height, but does not independently verify his measurement. Guinness’ account of the Shire describes the breed.
How certain is the historical measurement?
The 21.25-hand figure is Guinness World Records’ retrospective record, not a measurement independently confirmed here by a contemporary 1850 document. It is best stated as the height Guinness records for Sampson rather than as a surviving, independently corroborated measurement. Guinness also reports that he was later said to have weighed 1,524 kg (3,359 lb); this is a reported historical weight, not a verified contemporary weighing.

Does Sampson still hold the tallest-horse record?
Guinness treats Sampson/Mammoth as the historical all-time tallest horse. That category is distinct from the tallest living horse, which Guinness’ 2026 coverage identifies as Hugo following a 2025 assessment. Earlier, Big Jake was measured at 210.19 cm in 2010 in the living-horse record history. These are records from different dates and categories, not evidence that the historical Sampson claim has been replaced. Guinness’ coverage describes height as measured to the withers.
