Itching can be a sign of an allergy, but it cannot tell you what is causing it. Fleas, infections, mites, and other conditions can look similar, so a veterinarian needs to assess your pet’s signs and history before settling on a diagnosis. Keep track of where the irritation appears and when it happens; those details can help guide the visit.
Could my pet’s itching be allergies?
Possibly. Allergies are a group of possible causes, not a diagnosis you can make from itching alone. Dogs and cats may scratch, lick or chew their paws, rub their faces, or develop irritated skin or ear problems. Some food-related reactions can also coincide with vomiting or diarrhea. But those signs overlap with other conditions, and they do not identify an allergen by themselves.
Much of the detailed guidance on atopic dermatitis available from Cornell concerns dogs. In dogs, environmental atopic dermatitis can involve persistent itchiness, red or thickened skin, hair loss, and secondary skin or ear problems. Signs may flare seasonally or persist year-round. A pattern is useful information for your veterinarian, not proof of the cause. Cornell’s overview of canine atopic dermatitis describes these signs and treatment approaches.
What kinds of allergy might be involved?
Flea allergy
Some pets react strongly to flea bites. In dogs, intense itching may occur around the back near the tail and on the rear legs. Not finding a flea does not rule it out: fleas may not always be visible, and a veterinarian may consider flea dirt or the pattern of irritation when present. Cornell advises working with a veterinarian to choose appropriate products and a control plan. Cornell’s flea allergy dermatitis guidance explains the signs and control measures.

Food-related allergy
A food allergy can be associated with itchy skin, paws, or ears, and sometimes digestive signs such as vomiting or diarrhea. Those symptoms can also occur with flea or environmental allergies and with non-allergic problems. Changing foods casually cannot establish that food is the cause.
Environmental or contact reactions
Environmental triggers can contribute to allergic skin disease, while contact with an irritating substance may also cause skin signs. Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish these possibilities from food-related or flea-associated symptoms; your veterinarian will weigh the history and exam and decide what needs to be ruled out.

What should I tell the veterinarian?
Before the appointment, note where your pet itches or licks, when the signs began, whether they come and go, and any changes you have noticed in the skin, ears, or digestion. Also list foods, treats, supplements, flavored products, parasite preventives, shampoos, and other products your pet receives. These details can help the veterinary team assess possible causes and plan an evaluation. Cornell’s educational allergy poster outlines common signs and evaluation considerations.
Veterinary evaluation may include a history and physical examination and consideration of parasites, mites, infections, or other causes. Skin or blood allergy tests may help identify relevant allergens, but Cornell cautions that “These tests are not 100% accurate.” They are one part of an evaluation, not a stand-alone diagnosis.

How do vets test for food allergies?
For dogs with suspected food allergy, VCA describes a veterinarian-directed hypoallergenic elimination diet as the most accurate diagnostic method. The trial lasts 8 to 12 weeks, according to VCA, and must be exclusive: other foods, treats, supplements, or flavored items can undermine the result. If signs improve, the veterinarian may guide a food challenge by reintroducing the previous food; if signs return, that supports confirmation. See VCA’s food-allergy guidance for dogs.
Do not start a trial diet on your own or assume a retail “limited ingredient” food is suitable. VCA notes that cross-contamination can be a concern. Ask your veterinarian which diet to use and how to keep the trial strict. This protocol is described for dogs; the cited guidance does not establish the same duration or process for cats.

What can help manage allergy signs?
Management depends on the suspected cause and your pet’s individual health needs. It may combine trigger avoidance, parasite control, topical care, or medication selected by a veterinarian. There is no single product or medicine that suits every pet.
Flea control
When fleas are suspected, a control plan may include treating all household pets with appropriate products, washing bedding, and frequent vacuuming. Cornell notes that environmental control can take months, so ask your veterinarian how to choose products and maintain the plan rather than relying on a one-time treatment.

Topical care and shampoo
Shampoos, rinses, mousses, and medicated wipes may help remove allergens, moisturize skin, or address secondary infections. A shampoo can be an adjunct, but it does not diagnose or cure an allergy and may not be appropriate for every pet. Ask your veterinarian whether a particular product or bathing routine fits your pet’s skin condition.
Medication
Veterinarians may recommend medicines or parasite preventives depending on the cause, symptoms, and health history. Do not give human allergy medicines to a pet unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to; Cornell’s allergy poster emphasizes veterinary guidance for medicines intended for people.
When should I ask about a specialist?
If signs persist, recur, or are complicated by skin or ear problems, ask your veterinarian whether referral to a veterinary dermatologist would help. Cornell’s atopic dermatitis page links to specialist organizations. Your regular veterinarian can advise whether referral makes sense for your pet.
