A crew from Cobb County Fire Station 21 had recently completed pet-care certification when, on a later shift, veterinarians reportedly called for help with a difficult dog delivery. The October 6, 2026, account from iHeartDogs says the firefighters helped care for 15 newborn puppies after the mother needed an emergency C-section. The incident details have not been independently confirmed.
What happened at the veterinary clinic?
According to iHeartDogs’ October 6, 2026 report, the firefighters were called to a veterinary clinic after a pregnant dog experienced complications during labor. The dog needed an emergency C-section, and veterinarians asked the crew to help with the puppies.
The report says firefighters cleared placental sacs, suctioned the puppies’ noses and airways, assisted with medications, and placed the newborns in incubators. These are details attributed to the report, not independently corroborated veterinary records.
How many puppies were born?
iHeartDogs reported that the litter numbered 15. It said the puppies were born in August and reunited with the firefighters in October. Veterinarian Dr. Lauren Savoy reportedly credited the crew’s quick response and assistance with helping the puppies survive.

What training had the crew completed?
The report says the Station 21 crew had recently completed pet-care certification through VEG ER for Pets. It also describes the preparation as general animal CPR training and says this kind of training was new for many firefighters at the station. Some Cobb County crews already had specialized training involving police and fire dogs.
The report does not establish that the crew earned a particular CPR credential or provide details about the certification’s curriculum. Firefighter Damien Whitehead summed up the unexpected timing: “We officially got certified in pet care, they didn’t tell me that we’d be delivering puppies a shift later,”

Firefighter Brian Powell compared the emergency care with looking after a human newborn: “It was almost like having a regular baby, but a puppy,” At the October reunion, he said: “They would fit in the palm of my hand and now I’m using two to hold them, they’ve grown a lot,”
