Rolling, rubbing, chewing, drooling, vocalizing, or briefly acting unusually playful or relaxed can be a normal response to catnip. The reaction varies from cat to cat and usually passes quickly. Vomiting, diarrhea, or severe symptoms should not automatically be dismissed as part of the fun: contact a veterinarian if your cat seems unwell or you are unsure what it ate.
What a normal catnip reaction can look like
There is no medically validated checklist of 11 catnip-reaction signs. The signs below are a practical count of behaviors and short-lived changes reported in cats, not a diagnostic scale. A cat may show only a few—or none at all.
- Rolling: Your cat may roll on the floor or against the object carrying catnip.
- Face rubbing: Rubbing the cheeks or head on a toy, scratching post, or other catnip-scented surface is commonly reported.
- Chewing: Some cats chew catnip or a catnip-filled toy.
- Drooling: Drooling can accompany the behavioral response, but heavy or persistent drooling deserves attention, particularly with other symptoms.
- Vocalizing: Meowing or other vocal sounds may occur during the reaction.
- Increased activity: A responsive cat may become more active or excitable.
- Playful excitement: Some cats appear unusually playful for a short time.
- Relaxation: Other cats become calm rather than energetic.
- Sedation: A cat may seem drowsy or subdued; responses differ between individuals.
- More play biting or scratching: An excited cat may play more vigorously, including biting or scratching at a toy.
- Temporary loss of interest: After the response, a cat may be less responsive to catnip for a while.
Pet Poison Helpline describes reported behaviors including rolling, face rubbing, chewing, drooling, and vocalizing. It estimates that effects last around 10–15 minutes, followed by a temporary period of reduced response (Pet Poison Helpline, “The Chemistry of Catnip”). Cats Protection gives a typical duration of around 10 minutes (Cats Protection, “Catnip”). These are general estimates, not a deadline that proves a cat is healthy or ill.
Why cats react differently
Some cats show little or no response, while others become stimulated or relaxed. The published estimates differ: VCA Animal Hospitals says approximately 50% of cats do not respond, while Cats Protection estimates that 70–80% of domestic cats react. These figures come from different sources and should not be combined into a single definitive rate (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Catnip”; Cats Protection, “Catnip”).

Kittens commonly begin responding at around six months, according to VCA’s kitten guidance. That is an approximate age, not a health test or a deadline; a kitten’s lack of response does not by itself indicate a problem (VCA Animal Hospitals, kitten catnip guidance).
When symptoms are a reason to call a veterinarian
Vomiting and diarrhea should not be casually labeled normal excitement. ASPCA notes that catnip can cause these signs (ASPCA Animal Poison Control, “Catnip”). Their presence does not establish that catnip is the cause, and they are not signs to ignore if your cat is unwell.

Guidance on toxicity is not identical across sources: ASPCA’s plant database lists catnip as toxic to cats, while Pet Poison Helpline says significant toxicity is not expected from a toxicological standpoint. That difference is not a basis for diagnosing your cat at home or assuming any amount is safe. If your cat has symptoms, ate an uncertain amount, or you suspect poisoning, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Cats Protection advises immediate veterinary contact when poisoning is suspected and lists concerning signs that include salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, twitching, fitting, breathing difficulty, shock, collapse, and coma (Cats Protection, “Poisoning”). Breathing difficulty, collapse, fitting, or a rapidly worsening condition warrants urgent veterinary help.

What to do after your cat has catnip
- If your cat is showing only brief behavioral changes and otherwise seems well, keep an eye on them and let the response pass.
- If you see vomiting, diarrhea, persistent or heavy drooling, or any other worrying change, call your veterinarian for advice rather than assuming catnip explains it.
- If poisoning is suspected or your cat has severe symptoms, seek veterinary help immediately.
- Tell the veterinary team what product or plant your cat encountered, when it happened, and what signs you observed. Do not rely on a guessed safe dose.
Should you offer catnip toys?
Catnip toys and catnip on scratching posts can be optional enrichment for cats that respond positively. VCA recommends avoiding catnip products if they make your cat agitated (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Catnip”). A toy is for enrichment, not a treatment for vomiting, diarrhea, or other signs of illness.
