A Carolina Dog puppy may cost around $500–$1,000 according to a published PetMD estimate, but that figure is not a verified current local quote. Before choosing a breeder or rescue, compare the dog’s temperament and history, health records, what the price includes, and how well the dog fits your household. Carolina Dogs are often independent and reserved with strangers, so they are not automatically the right match for every family.
How much does a Carolina Dog puppy cost?
PetMD publishes a rough estimate of $500–$1,000 for a Carolina Dog puppy. The estimate’s publication date and geographic or market basis are not stated, so use it only as a starting point—not as a current quote or a guarantee of what a local breeder will charge. See PetMD’s Carolina Dog health and care profile.
Ask for the total price in writing and confirm exactly what it covers. A quote may or may not include veterinary care, vaccinations, registration, transport, or particular contract terms; do not assume these are included. When comparing breeders, weigh the documentation and support as well as the price.
Where can you find a Carolina Dog puppy?
Start with breeder research
The Carolina Dog Fanciers of America breeders directory is a breed-specific place to begin. Directory inclusion is a lead for your own evaluation, not a guarantee about an individual breeder or litter. The directory recommends genetic testing before breeding or buying and names the Embark Breed Identification & Health Condition Identification DNA Test Kit for Dogs. You can ask the breeder and your veterinarian whether testing is appropriate and how to interpret the results; a consumer DNA test should not be treated as a substitute for veterinary care or other health screening.

Before placing a deposit, ask the breeder to explain and document:
- Health screening performed for the parents, and any results available for the puppy.
- The puppy’s veterinary records, including care already received.
- How puppies are handled and gradually introduced to everyday sights, sounds, people, and experiences.
- The written contract, including what happens if the placement does not work out and whether the breeder will take the dog back.
- The full price and each item included in it.
Consider adoption or rescue
Adoption is another route, but current Carolina Dog puppy listings and a defensible breed-specific adoption-fee range are not established here. Check current rescue organizations and listings directly, and speak with the organization about the particular dog’s behavior, history, and needs. The AKC’s guidance on choosing a dog and considering rescue recommends matching an older or rescued dog to your household’s lifestyle and cautions readers about high-fee rescue organizations selling dogs online.

What is a Carolina Dog like?
The American Kennel Club lists typical Carolina Dog height as 17.75–19.5 inches, weight as 30–55 pounds, and life expectancy as 12–15 years. These are breed-profile ranges, not a prediction for an individual dog. The AKC Carolina Dog breed profile describes the breed as independent and reserved with strangers.
That reserve deserves particular attention when assessing a puppy or adult dog. The 2022 Carolina Dog breed standard states: “No individual should be expected to be friendly and outgoing, or to enjoy physical contact with strangers.” This is a caution against assuming stranger sociability, not a guarantee that every dog will behave the same way. Individual temperament and history matter.

What care does a Carolina Dog need?
Exercise, training, and socialization
Plan for daily activity and mental engagement. The AKC breed profile points to walks, play, outdoor activities, and training games as possible outlets. Introduce new people and situations thoughtfully and gradually, taking the individual dog’s comfort into account rather than expecting immediate sociability. If children are in the home, supervise their interactions with the dog.
Grooming
Routine grooming is generally modest: brush the coat, trim nails, and bathe when needed. The dog’s individual coat and condition determine the practical schedule.

Food and medication decisions
Choose food appropriate to the dog’s life stage, monitor weight and treats, and keep fresh water available. If you are considering a home-prepared diet, plan it with veterinary supervision. The AKC notes that some Carolina Dogs may be ivermectin-sensitive; discuss antiparasitic medication with your veterinarian before giving it. That note is not a blanket prohibition or a diagnosis for an individual dog.

Breed tendencies help set expectations, but they cannot tell you exactly how a particular dog will behave. When comparing breeder and adoption options, consider the individual dog’s known temperament and history, the transparency of records, the fit with your household, the full upfront cost and included care, and what support is available after placement.
