Pakistan’s new Punjab sanctuary is reported to connect with protected habitat in Sindh to create a continuous corridor of about 400 kilometers (249 miles). The Punjab sanctuary itself is much shorter: Mongabay reported it at nearly 200 kilometers (123 miles). The distinction matters because the “250-mile” figure describes the combined corridor, not the newly declared sanctuary alone.
What is Pakistan’s 250-mile dolphin corridor?
It is a reported chain of protected river habitat spanning Punjab and Sindh, intended to give endangered Indus River dolphins a more connected stretch of the Indus. Mongabay reported in September 2026 that the new Punjab zone is nearly 200 kilometers (123 miles) long and joins a pre-existing protected area in Sindh, bringing the combined corridor to about 400 kilometers (249 miles). Mongabay’s report is the source for both distance estimates.
The approximately 250-mile description is therefore an estimate for the combined Punjab–Sindh corridor. The notification and map were not available for direct review, and the total distance was not independently measured here.
Where is the new Indus River dolphin sanctuary?
On June 13, 2026, Dawn reported that Punjab’s secretary of forests and wildlife announced the Panjnad Indus River Dolphin Wildlife Sanctuary and issued a notification. Dawn described its Indus River area as running from Jampur, Bait Lundi Pitafi to Guddu Barrage, protected until further orders. Dawn’s account reports the announcement and boundary description; it does not give a distance for the Punjab section.

Because the underlying legal notification and mapped boundary are not reproduced in that account, its description should not be taken as an independent reading of the legal instrument. The available reporting also does not establish the detailed restrictions that apply inside the sanctuary.
Why a connected corridor matters to the dolphins
The Indus River dolphin, locally called bhulan, is a freshwater cetacean found in Pakistan’s Indus system and in India’s Beas River. NOAA Fisheries classifies it as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and says it occupies about 20 percent of its historical range. NOAA’s species profile, last updated July 29, 2026, describes the scale of that range loss.

Dams, barrages and canals divide the river system, fragmenting habitat and impeding dolphin movement. In muddy water, dolphins rely on echolocation and are functionally blind, as WWF explains. Fishing gear can entangle them; pollution and chemical contaminants can affect dolphins and their prey; and animals can become stranded in irrigation canals.
A protected corridor could help conserve connected habitat, but designation alone does not show that those pressures have been removed. The reports establish the announcement and reported geography, not the sanctuary’s enforcement effectiveness or a resulting increase in dolphins.

What dolphin counts do—and do not—tell us
A local count is not a national population estimate. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that a GIS-based survey conducted February 18–24, 2026 recorded 135 dolphins in the Dera Ismail Khan stretch between Chashma Barrage and Ramak. That figure applies to that surveyed segment, not the entire Indus range or the new Punjab sanctuary. APP published the survey report on February 25, 2026.
WWF’s species page lists 1,816 dolphins, but the reviewed passage does not give the figure’s date or census method. It should not be presented as a current, verified national census. WWF’s population listing is not enough on its own to establish how many Indus River dolphins are alive today.

Conservation work beyond drawing a boundary
WWF describes rescue work, education, radio-tag monitoring, outreach to farmers to reduce water and chemical use, and engagement with fishermen and ecotourism as parts of conservation activity for the species. These are WWF’s descriptions of its work, not an independently evaluated assessment of the sanctuary’s impact. WWF’s conservation account provides those program details.
At a WWF conference on December 5, 2025, Pakistan’s federal climate minister Dr. Musadik Malik said saving the Indus River dolphin is “a matter of protecting life and humanity.” The Government of Pakistan press release presents this as an advocacy statement, not a scientific finding.
