Two lost dogs, one large and one barely over five pounds, were reported stranded on a busy Los Angeles street, with drivers swerving around them. According to an October 6, 2026 account from A-Z Animals, two rescuers stopped traffic, used food-baited cages to secure both dogs, and took them to a veterinary clinic, where their owners recognized them and were reunited with them.
What happened, in order
Everything below comes from A-Z Animals’ report. A republication on AOL, credited to Ashley Driggs and dated the same day, repeats the same story rather than adding a second account. We found no separate statement from the rescuers, the owners, the clinic or a public agency, so treat the details as reported, not independently confirmed.
1. Two dogs on a dangerous road
The report describes a larger dog and a much smaller one on a busy Los Angeles street, with vehicles swerving around them. The small dog is described as weighing barely more than five pounds. That is an anecdotal description, not a measured figure.
2. Rescuers stop traffic and move the dogs
Rescuers Suzette Hall and Rosario Ortiz arrived, stopped traffic and moved the dogs to a nearby yard, away from the road.

3. Food-baited cages
The rescuers used two cages baited with food. The larger dog, named Nova, stayed close while the smaller dog, Benji, was placed in one cage. Nova then entered a second cage after food attracted her. The cages and food were simply the tools used here, not a product endorsement.
4. Clinic and reunion
The dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic. A couple arrived there and recognized them as their missing dogs. The report says the family had been searching for them and later put security measures in place at home.

What the report does not say
- The owners are not named.
- It does not explain how the dogs got out or how far they travelled.
- It does not say what the home security measures were.
- It includes no verified quotes from the rescuers, owners or clinic staff.
The headline’s framing, that the big dog “refused to leave” her small friend, reflects the report’s account of Nova staying close to Benji. Whether she was deliberately protecting him is an interpretation, not something the reporting establishes. What is documented is that the two stayed together and that Nova followed the food into the second cage.

- Traffic control came first. Getting the dogs off the road before trying to catch them removed the immediate danger and gave rescuers time to work.
- Food worked where chasing usually doesn’t. Frightened dogs often run from people who approach them directly, so luring them into cages is a calmer option.
- Recognition at the clinic closed the loop. The owners, who had been searching, found the dogs there. Checking local vets and shelters is a standard step when a pet goes missing, and ID such as a microchip or tag makes the match easier. The report does not say whether these dogs had either.
