Choose an automatic cat feeder by starting with your cat’s food and veterinarian-directed feeding plan, then matching the feeder to the problem you need it to solve. A programmable hopper may be enough for one cat eating dry food on a regular schedule; controlled-access feeders can help with food stealing or different diets. Before buying, verify the exact model’s portion increments, food compatibility, cleaning requirements, and behavior during power or internet interruptions.
Start with the feeding plan, not the feeder
First establish what the cat should eat each day and how that amount should be divided among meals. This matters especially for weight management or a medical diet: PetMD’s guidance on smart technology and cat weight loss says the amount and calorie content of each cat’s food need to be known and controlled for a weight-management plan to work. The Whisker Feeder-Robot manual also advises checking daily portion needs with a veterinarian because individual needs vary.
If a cat has a body condition score above 7/9, PetMD recommends a complete physical exam and nutrition consultation before starting a diet. A feeder can dispense a chosen setting; it cannot determine the appropriate diet or ensure that a cat loses weight.
Match the feeder type to your household

Check portion size on the exact model
A feeder’s serving setting is a device unit, not a universal weight. Depending on the model, a portion may be based on volume or estimated weight; kibble type and shape can affect what a setting dispenses. Compare the smallest increment with the cat’s feeding plan, consult the current manual, and measure output with the food you intend to use if precision matters. The specifications below are examples from manufacturer manuals, not independent accuracy tests or standards for other feeders.
- PetSafe: One operating guide describes a particular feeder programmable for up to 12 meals per day, with portions from 1/8 cup to 4 cups. It also describes a removable stainless-steel bowl and battery compartment. These figures apply to the model in that guide, not every PetSafe feeder.
- Whisker Feeder-Robot: Its manual describes 1/8-cup or 1/4-cup increments depending on configuration, with different daily meal limits for control-panel and app programming. These are model- and configuration-specific details that may vary by generation.
Read the current manual for the exact model you are considering; do not assume a serving unit or schedule limit transfers between products.

Inspect the practical details before buying
- Food compatibility: Does the exact model accept the food type, kibble size, and shape your cat eats?
- Schedule and portions: What is the smallest dispensing increment, how many meals can it schedule, and how is the schedule stored?
- Power and connectivity: What happens if mains power or Wi-Fi fails? Is backup power supported, and does the schedule continue without an internet connection?
- Cleaning: Which parts touch food, and can the bowl, hopper, lid, and other relevant components be removed and cleaned as directed?
- Access control: For a multi-cat home, does the device identify the intended cat, and does it support that cat’s chip or tag? Can another animal still reach the food?
- Failures and service: What happens if food jams, the cat does not eat, or a scheduled meal is missed? Are replacement bowls, lids, seals, batteries, or other service parts available for this model?
Plan for introduction and ongoing care
- Set up the feeder while you are home, and let the cat investigate it before relying on scheduled meals.
- Observe each cat using the feeder, especially if access is controlled or there are other animals in the home.
- Verify the portions it dispenses with the food you actually use, and compare them with the feeding plan.
- Check that food was dispensed and eaten; keep fresh water available and arrange appropriate care when you are away.
An automatic feeder does not monitor a cat’s health or replace a caregiver. Treat it as a way to carry out a suitable feeding routine, not as a substitute for observing the cat and responding when something changes.
