Put a new scratcher where your cat already scratches, and offer a bed or cat tree as a safe, optional resting place. Let your cat investigate at its own pace: the goal is to make the resource appealing, not to force your cat to use it.
Choose a scratcher that suits your cat
Before buying or moving a scratcher, notice what your cat scratches now. Direction, texture, and location are useful clues: a cat that targets carpet may prefer a horizontal or diagonal scratcher, while a cat that reaches up a sofa may prefer a vertical post. ASPCA recommends offering suitable surfaces and orientations and teaching cats where to scratch rather than trying to stop scratching altogether. - Match the direction: Choose vertical, horizontal, or angled surfaces based on the cat’s established scratching posture.
- Match the material: If the cat scratches carpet, try a carpet-like surface or cardboard; if it targets another texture, look for a scratcher with a similar feel.
- Check stability and reach: The scratcher should not wobble, and a vertical post should let the cat stretch fully. Cats Protection recommends at least 60 cm for an average adult cat, but the right height depends on the individual cat. Cats Protection’s scratching guide
Put the scratcher where the habit already happens
Start beside the place your cat scratches, such as a sofa, bed, carpet, or doorway. A scratcher near a sleeping spot may also be handy when a cat stretches after waking. Entry and exit points can be useful locations too. Leave familiar scratching resources in place while your cat explores the new one rather than immediately removing the old option.
Once your cat uses the new scratcher consistently, you can move it gradually if it needs to be elsewhere. Moving it in small increments gives the cat a chance to keep finding it; a sudden move away from the established scratching area may make it less appealing. Cats Protection discusses both placement and gradual relocation in its scratching guidance.

Invite exploration without forcing contact
Give the cat space to inspect and use the scratcher on its own. You can try catnip or cat mint if your cat responds to it, or play with a toy nearby to draw attention to the area. These are optional invitations, not guarantees.
Do not pick up your cat’s paws and rub them against the scratcher. ASPCA and Cats Protection caution that forced contact can frighten a cat or make it avoid the post. Rewarding spontaneous investigation or scratching is a gentler way to encourage the behavior.

Offer a bed or cat tree as another resting choice
Place a new bed in a quiet, safe area and keep familiar sleeping places available. Cats rotate their sleeping spots, so a bed that goes unused for a while does not necessarily mean it has failed. If the first location does not attract interest, try somewhere warm or sunny, or an elevated perch on a sturdy cat tree. Make resources easy to reach in a multi-cat home
Another cat may block access to a bed or scratcher, even without an obvious confrontation. Cats Protection recommends one of each essential resource per cat, plus one extra, with items distributed in different locations. Beds and scratching posts are among its examples. When scratching may need more than a new product
If scratching seems connected to anxiety, or continues despite providing suitable options, a new bed or post may not address the underlying issue. Cats Protection advises seeking a veterinary health check and, where appropriate, help from a qualified behaviorist. A sudden change in scratching behavior is also a reason to consult a veterinarian.
Do not spray FELIWAY Classic on a scratching post to encourage scratching. Cats Protection’s 2025 behavior guide cautions that the product encourages facial rubbing, which may discourage scratching at that spot. Cats Protection’s scratching advice
