Check its assembly and placement before choosing a fix: a non-slip mat may help with minor sliding, while rocking or tipping calls for correcting the setup or using the exact model’s approved wall hardware.
Identify what is moving
Watch the scratcher while your cat uses it, or gently check it when the cat is away. The type of movement points to the right next step:
- The whole base slides: the contact between the base and floor may lack grip.
- One corner rocks: the base may not be sitting flat, or the floor may be uneven.
- The upper structure sways or tips: check assembly and placement, then consult the manual for any model-specific wall brace or anti-toppling hardware.
These symptoms are not interchangeable. A floor-grip accessory does not correct a rocking base or secure a structure that can tip.
Check assembly, parts, and placement
Inspect the assembled scratcher
Use the product manual to confirm that required parts are present and installed in the correct positions. Check joints, screws, and the base for looseness or damage. Retighten fasteners only as the manufacturer directs; different products may use different fittings and assembly methods.

If a part is damaged, missing, or the scratcher cannot be made stable as designed, stop using it and contact the manufacturer about compatible replacement parts. A mat or further tightening is not a remedy for a damaged or structurally unstable unit.
Put it on a suitable surface
Place the scratcher on a flat, level, stable floor. Some manuals also specify positioning a particular model against a wall or in a corner, so follow the instructions for your exact product rather than assuming every design should be placed the same way. For example, Action’s VKA92 manual recommends a flat, stable surface and placement in a corner against both walls; its separate Scratching Post Deluxe manual recommends a flat, stable surface against a wall. If the base slides on the floor
For minor sliding on a compatible smooth floor, a non-slip mat beneath the base or gripper pads attached to it may add friction. Check that the accessory fits the base and floor, does not create a raised or unstable edge, and is permitted by the scratcher’s instructions. After placing the mat or pads, check that the base sits flat and retest gently. If the scratcher still rocks, sways, or tips, remove the accessory as a presumed fix and address the underlying setup or approved anchoring instead.

If the scratcher sways or may tip
Check the manual for a supplied wall mount, anti-toppling strap, or other specified restraint. Install only the hardware intended for that model, at the location and by the method its instructions describe. Anchor points and installation steps vary, so there is no universal strap position or wall-fixing specification to apply to every cat tree.
For instance, the CAT ACTIVITY TOWER manual calls for fastening that product to the wall with its supplied wall mount and notes that a suitable drill and screwdriver are not included. That requirement applies to the cited tower, not automatically to other scratchers. CAT ACTIVITY TOWER manual

Globlazer’s FAQ, updated September 2026, likewise recommends an even floor, a wall corner, and the model’s included anti-toppling fittings; it says the anchor points and steps differ by model. Its assembly manual’s wall-strap step says: “Please use the anti-toppling strap to secure the cat tree to the wall to ensure its stability and safety!” Follow your own product’s instructions rather than transferring that advice to a different design. Recheck stability and follow product limits
Once assembly, placement, or approved hardware has been addressed, check stability again and follow the maker’s maintenance instructions, including any periodic screw checks. Stop using a unit that remains unstable and ask the manufacturer for guidance.
Do not assume that one scratcher’s load limit applies to another. Action lists a maximum load of 6 kg for its VKA92 scratching post; that figure is specific to that product. Its manual also warns that a person climbing or leaning on the product can unbalance it. Action VKA92 manual
Choose the fix for the movement you see

Manufacturer instructions and designs differ, and the available guidance does not establish a controlled comparison showing that mats or wall mounts are universally more effective. Treat them as different tools for different movement problems.
