Choose a veterinary practice that can meet your pug’s everyday needs, explain how it handles emergencies, and discuss your dog’s individual care clearly. If a procedure involving anaesthesia is planned, ask the veterinary team how it will assess and manage your pug’s airway-related concerns. In the UK, RCVS accreditation can help you screen practices, but it is voluntary and should be considered alongside access, communication, services and cost.

Start with your pug’s needs and the practice’s services

A general veterinary practice may be suitable for routine care, but check that it treats dogs and can provide the services your pug is likely to need. If your dog has breathing concerns or may need surgery or anaesthesia, ask about the team’s relevant experience, facilities and referral arrangements.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) advises owners to focus on the skills and qualifications of the team, service quality, and the needs of both pet and owner—not on whether a practice is independent, corporate or charity-run. Its Find a Vet service can help you identify practices and check their details.

  • Do you routinely treat dogs and provide the services my pug needs?
  • Who would normally see my dog, and how are records shared if another clinician or provider is involved?
  • If specialist tests or surgery are needed, which providers do you refer to, and can I discuss alternatives?

Find out exactly how emergency care works

Ask what happens when the practice is closed. It may provide emergency cover itself or arrange for another provider to do so. Find out who provides the service, where it is located, and how your regular practice coordinates with it. Consider the journey time and how you would transport your pug in an urgent situation.

UK government guidance recommends checking who supplies out-of-hours care and how near that provider is. You can also ask about opening hours and appointment availability, since practical access matters when choosing a regular practice.

Use RCVS accreditation as one screening signal

The RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme. The RCVS says participating practices undergo regular assessments and spot checks. Assessment areas include hygiene, emergency arrangements, staff training, medical equipment and facilities, and procedures for providing cost estimates. See the RCVS list of accredited practices for details.

Accreditation can offer useful evidence about practice standards, but it is not a guarantee of a particular clinical outcome or a substitute for checking whether the practice can meet your pug’s needs. Ask about the specific service, equipment, staffing and referral options relevant to your dog.

Compare access, fees and communication

Fees and arrangements can differ between practices. Ask for current prices for consultations and common services relevant to your pug, such as vaccinations, microchipping or neutering. Also ask about emergency charges, payment arrangements and whether you can receive an estimate before treatment.

  • The estimated total cost, including whether further treatment may be needed.
  • How results and records will be shared if another provider is involved.

Ask about anaesthesia if your pug may need a procedure

Pugs are brachycephalic (flat-faced). Veterinary anaesthesia guidance describes increased airway-related concerns and potential complications for brachycephalic dogs, but that does not mean every pug has the same risk or needs the same intervention. Ask the treating team to explain its assessment for your individual dog rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all answer.

  • How will you assess my pug’s individual airway and anaesthesia risks?
  • What monitoring will be used during anaesthesia, and how will potential airway problems be handled?
  • What is the recovery plan, and what signs should I watch for afterwards?
  • Would referral be appropriate if this practice does not have the expertise or equipment needed?

The American Animal Hospital Association’s anesthesia and monitoring guidelines for dogs and cats provide professional context; your pug’s veterinarian should explain the plan for your dog and the procedure being considered.

A practical comparison checklist

What to compare What to check
Clinical fit Dog services, relevant team experience, facilities and referral options.
Emergency access Who provides out-of-hours care, where they are, and how your regular practice coordinates with them.
Communication and continuity Who sees your pug, how records and results are shared, and whether treatment options are explained clearly.
Costs Routine and emergency fees, estimates, payment arrangements and possible referral costs.
Practical access Travel time, transport, opening hours and appointment availability.
Practice standards Whether the practice is RCVS-accredited and whether its assessed services are relevant to your needs.
