Hiding at first is common; don’t pull the cat out or rush them through the home. Set up the room before arrival, keep an eye on eating and toileting, and expand access when the cat shows they are ready.
Prepare a quiet room before your cat arrives
Choose a low-traffic room where the cat can settle without being disturbed. Set it up before bringing the carrier in so you won’t need to move furniture or search for supplies while the cat is frightened. Cats Protection’s bringing-a-cat-home guidance recommends giving a new cat a quiet starting space and time to explore it.
- Put food and water where the cat can reach them, with the litter tray in a separate, private spot as far away as practical.
- Provide a comfortable sleeping place, a scratching opportunity, and a few toys.
- Offer a sheltered hiding place, such as a covered bed, an accessible carrier, or a cardboard box with an opening. Make sure it can remain undisturbed.
- Include a suitable elevated spot if the room allows, and block access to unsafe places where the cat could become trapped, such as an open chimney.
- Secure the room’s doors and windows before letting the cat out of the carrier.
A refuge does not need to be expensive. Choose one the cat can enter and leave freely, that is stable and easy to clean, and that you won’t have to disturb. Cats Protection advises that a covered cardboard box can provide a safe hiding place; there is no established head-to-head evidence here showing that a purchased covered bed works better.
Make arrival calm and let the cat choose when to emerge
Bring the cat to the prepared room in a secure carrier. Set the carrier down, open it, and give the cat the option to come out voluntarily. Keep the room quiet and leave the cat alone to investigate before approaching. Familiar bedding or another safe-smelling item may help, and keeping feeding and daily routines consistent can make the change less disruptive. If the cat hides, leave them there as long as the spot is safe. Don’t drag them out, reach into the hiding place repeatedly, chase them, scold them, or insist on petting. Put food close enough to be accessible without requiring the cat to cross the room, then give them privacy. Check whether the food has been eaten and whether the litter tray has been used; a cat may wait until nighttime to come out. Build trust without pressure
Let the cat set the pace. Sit at their level at a comfortable distance, speak softly, and allow them to investigate or initiate contact. Treats or play can be offered if the cat is interested, but don’t use them to lure the cat into a corner or force an interaction. The ASPCA’s guide to shy shelter cats likewise emphasizes letting cats interact on their own terms.

Keep the routine predictable and give the cat access to their retreat whenever people are in the room. Some shy cats remain reserved even after they feel safe. The goal is for the cat to eat, rest, explore, and interact comfortably at their own level—not necessarily to become a lap cat. Cats Protection’s advice on helping shy cats relax also stresses patience and respect for individual temperament.
Expand the cat’s territory at their pace
There is no guaranteed settling timetable: cats vary, and adjustment may take days or longer. Rather than opening the whole home on a fixed schedule, wait for signs of comfort and curiosity. Then allow access to another area in stages, while keeping the starting room available as a retreat. The same cat-led approach applies outdoors: follow appropriate safety guidance rather than assuming a newly arrived cat is ready to roam.

Progress may be subtle or uneven. Look for a pattern of reassuring signs, such as:
- Eating and using the litter tray regularly.
- Grooming, resting, or exploring when the room is quiet.
- Playing, rubbing against objects, or choosing to approach you.
One individual cat may take longer than another; a Cats Protection story about Elvis describes one cat taking several weeks before meeting the rest of the household. That is an example, not a timetable for other cats.

Know when hiding or appetite loss needs help
Stress can prompt hiding, but illness or pain can also change a cat’s behaviour. Contact your veterinarian if hiding is unusually persistent, suddenly increases, or comes with changes in appetite, toileting, grooming, or other health signs. If medical causes are ruled out but fear remains a problem, ask your veterinarian about a qualified cat behaviourist.
Take food refusal seriously. VCA Animal Hospitals advises seeking immediate veterinary attention if a cat has not eaten properly for 24 hours; call sooner if the cat seems unwell. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says appetite loss can seriously affect an adult cat’s health if it lasts as little as 24 hours, and that food avoidance for a kitten younger than six weeks for 12 hours can pose a lethal threat. These are not reasons to wait when other urgent symptoms are present: VCA lists breathing problems and straining in the litter box among signs that need prompt attention.
