Find the escape route before changing the kennel
Inspect the enclosure and watch how your dog behaves around it. Look for footholds or furniture near the perimeter, holes beneath the fence, damaged mesh, chew marks, and a latch the dog can reach or manipulate. Dogs may climb, dig, chew through a barrier, or learn to open a gate, so a fix aimed at the wrong route may not help. Humane World for Animals recommends assessing both the escape method and the reason the dog is trying to leave.
Consider the circumstances as well as the hardware. Boredom, isolation, too little interaction or exercise, sexual roaming, fear, and separation-related distress can all contribute. Avoid treating escape as simple stubbornness: if the attempts occur during frightening events or when the dog is left alone, containment changes may need to be paired with professional behavior or veterinary advice.
Choose a fix that matches the route

For climbing or jumping
Humane World for Animals recommends an inward-tilting fence extension for climbing or jumping dogs. Remove tables, chairs, doghouses, and other objects close enough to act as launch points. A covered kennel run is another category to assess if a roof is appropriate for your setup; the rescue resource does not specify a product or prove that any particular roof will contain every dog.
For digging
Options in the humane guidance include burying chicken wire at the fence base with sharp edges rolled inward, placing large rocks along the base, or laying chain-link fencing on the ground. Match the barrier to the site and install it so exposed sharp edges cannot injure the dog. These ground-level measures do not solve a climbing route.

For doors and gates
Check whether the latch is secure and whether the dog can reach it. Supervise entry and exit, teach a sit and stay at doors, and inspect the fence before outdoor access without supervision. The Harrisburg handout also advises keeping the dog leashed off your property.
Reduce escape motivation and manage outdoor time
If boredom or isolation may be contributing, Humane World for Animals suggests daily walks, fetch or Frisbee, short daily training sessions, obedience practice, interactive toys, and more time with people. These activities can provide outlets, but they are not substitutes for a secure enclosure. Keep the dog indoors when it cannot be supervised, and arrange care or a walk if it will be alone for an extended period.

Seattle Humane describes crate training as a gradual way to help a dog treat an indoor crate as a quiet resting place. An indoor crate may help with supervised management, but that guidance does not establish that crating suits every dog or duration, or that a crate alone resolves an escape problem.
When to seek behavior or veterinary help
If escape attempts are linked to frightening events, fear, or signs of separation distress, consult a qualified trainer or veterinarian. Humane World for Animals recommends professional help for fear-related cases and behavior modification for separation anxiety. The Harrisburg handout also points readers to a behavior team, veterinarian, or dog behaviorist. A professional can help determine whether the behavior needs more than a change to the enclosure.

Do not punish after an escape
Do not punish a dog after it has already escaped. Humane World for Animals warns that after-the-fact punishment may make a dog afraid to return, and that punishment can worsen fear- or separation-related problems. Siberian Husky Rescue also cautions that excessive punishment and erratic training can damage the relationship. Focus on preventing the next escape and addressing its cause.
