Pet rats need a secure, well-ventilated cage with a solid floor, a balanced rat-food staple, fresh water checked daily, compatible rat companions, regular enrichment, and routine veterinary care. Use this checklist to prepare their home, build a manageable cleaning routine, and spot changes that merit a call to a veterinarian.

Set up a safe, comfortable home

Choose the right enclosure

  • Pick a secure, escape-proof cage that is well ventilated and easy to clean, with room for rats to exercise, eat, nest, and retreat. Groups need more room than a single rat. There is no established universal minimum cage size for every group; consider horizontal and vertical space, the number of rats, and how the layout supports activity and refuge. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s rat-owner guidance and expert-consultation housing guidance.
  • Use a solid floor. Wire mesh or grid flooring can injure feet and legs.
  • Avoid wood cages: urine can soak into the material and contribute to ammonia buildup, and rats may chew the wood.
  • Provide several levels and a mix of places to climb, hide, dig, nest, and explore. Multiple feeding and water locations can be useful in group housing. Arrange furnishings to reduce fall and entrapment risks.

Choose bedding and nesting material

  • Use suitable, low-dust bedding and nesting material, and keep the sleeping area dry.
  • Avoid scented bedding, which can irritate rodents, and untreated wood chips, which may contain respiratory irritants. Merck’s rat-and-mouse housing guidance covers these material cautions.

Build a cleaning routine that limits dust and ammonia

Remove soiled bedding as it accumulates and clean the cage regularly. Merck’s 2024 rat-owner recommendations are to clean the cage at least weekly and change bedding at least twice a week. Those are husbandry recommendations; adjust the routine to the enclosure, bedding, number of rats, and how quickly waste builds up. Do not allow urine odor or ammonia to accumulate.

  1. Remove wet or soiled bedding and waste regularly, and keep nesting and sleeping areas dry.
  2. At least weekly, clean the cage and replace bedding at least twice weekly, following the cited Merck schedule as a baseline.
  3. Clean in a well-ventilated area. Wash your hands after handling rats, waste, bedding, toys, or cage equipment.
  4. Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings, urine, or nests. UK public-health guidance advises wetting contaminated waste before removal and using gloves and a suitable dust mask when cleaning animal housing. Follow UK government cleaning guidance.

Feed a balanced diet and check water daily

Make complete rat food the staple

Choose a balanced commercial rat food as the foundation of the diet. Seed-and-pellet mixes can let rats pick out preferred seeds and leave pellets behind, so a complete food helps avoid selective feeding. If changing from a seed mix or another food, introduce the new diet gradually. Merck’s rat care guidance discusses diet and feeding.

Keep treats modest

Small amounts of fresh vegetables or fruit can be offered as treats, but treats should not replace the balanced staple. Avoid fatty treats, particularly for older rats that are prone to obesity. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal portion size, so ask your veterinarian about an appropriate amount for your rat.

  • Escape-Proof Door Lock: Features a wide front door that allows easy access for your furry friends. The upgraded two-finger locking system of ferret cage provides double protection—preventing clever escapes and keeping your pet safe from other animals, so you can stay worry-free

Keep water available

Provide clean water and check the bottle or other water setup every day to make sure it is available and working. CDC small-mammal guidance also recommends fresh food and water daily: CDC: Small Mammals—Healthy Pets, Healthy People.

Provide companionship, exercise, and enrichment

Plan for compatible rat company

Rats are social animals and generally benefit from living with compatible rats of the same species. Introductions and group composition matter: Merck notes that males may fight unless raised together. Separate males and females to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and do not house rats with mice. See Merck’s rat-owner guidance and Victoria’s government guidance on pet rodents.

Make room for daily activity

Offer varied opportunities to climb, hide, explore, dig, nest, and play. Merck lists wheels, tubes, ladders, and climbing blocks as enrichment options. If you provide a wheel, choose one with a smooth running surface and a diameter of at least 12–14 inches, Merck’s 2024 husbandry recommendation, so toes and feet are less likely to be caught.

Handle gently and supervise children

Build familiarity with gentle handling. Supervise children around rats, have them wash their hands afterward, and do not let them put rats or items contaminated by rats near their mouths. CDC and UK public-health guidance advise handwashing and basic precautions because rodents can carry organisms even when they appear healthy. Keep rats out of food-preparation areas, do not kiss them, and do not let them eat human food. Pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems should review UK guidance and consult a health professional as appropriate.

Check your rats daily and arrange veterinary care

Find a rat-savvy veterinarian before you need one

Small mammals may need specialized veterinary care, so identify a veterinarian experienced with rats before an urgent problem arises. Merck recommends annual examinations by a rat-savvy veterinarian. CDC’s general small-mammal guidance says to take a new pet for a check-up within a week of getting it; this is CDC advice for small mammals, not a rat-specific interval that replaces your veterinarian’s recommendations. See Merck’s routine rat health-care guidance and CDC’s small-mammal guidance.

Notice changes early

During a daily check, note appetite, energy, coat, breathing, eyes and nose, posture, movement, wounds, and urine and stool. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you notice a change such as:
