Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s diet at routine exams—and sooner if weight, appetite, digestion, health, or life stage changes. Contact the vet about a sudden loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss rather than assuming a food change will fix it; either can signal an underlying health problem.

Bring up nutrition at routine veterinary exams

Nutrition is part of preventive care, not just a concern when a pet becomes ill. AAHA’s 2021 guidelines recommend nutritional screening for every dog and cat at every routine physical examination throughout life. A screening can identify when a more detailed assessment is warranted. FDA’s summary of the AAHA guidelines explains the recommendation.

Ask the veterinarian to assess your pet’s weight and body condition, explain the scoring system they use, and tell you what to monitor at home. In a 2022 Association for Pet Obesity Prevention survey reported by the FDA, 60% of U.S. cats and 59% of U.S. dogs were estimated to be overweight or obese. That is a survey estimate, not a current census. The FDA’s weight and appetite guidance includes questions to raise at an appointment.

Contact your veterinarian sooner when something changes

Appetite or weight changes

If a pet that normally eats well suddenly loses interest in food, contact a veterinarian. The FDA notes that appetite loss can be a sign of serious illness, including cancer, infection, pain, liver problems, or kidney disease. Sudden or unexplained weight loss also deserves veterinary attention. Do not treat either change as a reason to switch foods without first asking what may be causing it.

The cited guidance does not set one waiting period that applies to every pet. Ask your veterinarian how promptly your individual pet should be assessed, especially if the appetite change or weight loss is sudden.

Digestive, dental, skin, or muscle changes

Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, dental disease, poor skin or coat, or loss of muscle can all be reasons to review nutrition with the vet. AAHA’s risk factors also include unexplained weight change and body-condition scores below 4/9 or above 5/9. These scores are prompts for an extended nutritional assessment, not a substitute for a veterinary evaluation. AAHA’s nutritional risk-factor list describes these triggers.

A new diagnosis, medication, or supplement

Ask whether a diagnosis, medication, or supplement changes what your pet should eat or how much. A food that is complete and balanced for a life stage is not automatically suitable for every pet with a medical condition. Bring the names and amounts of medicines and supplements to the conversation.

A change in life stage or feeding approach

Growing animals, pregnant or nursing pets, and older pets may have different nutritional needs. Ask for guidance when your pet enters a new life stage or when you are considering a raw, home-prepared, vegetarian, or vegan diet. AAHA treats unusual diets as a nutritional risk factor; a veterinary discussion can address adequacy and safety for the individual animal.

Ask about the food, portion, and whole feeding routine

The right amount depends on the pet, not just the package chart. The FDA notes that feeding directions may not fit an individual animal’s age, activity, or other circumstances. Ask for advice based on your pet’s health, weight, and body condition, including how often to feed.

A useful assessment covers the animal, the diet, and feeding management. AAHA recommends considering what and how much the pet eats, treats and extras, feeding location and method, and whether other pets compete for food. Keep a simple record before the appointment:

AAHA identifies calories from noncomplete or unbalanced foods above 10% of total daily calories as a nutritional risk factor, because extras can dilute nutrients in the main diet and add calories. This is a guideline threshold, not a target for treats. AAHA’s complete nutritional assessment guidance outlines the broader feeding history to discuss.

Understand what “complete and balanced” on a label means

In FDA guidance, “complete and balanced” indicates that a food is intended to serve as the sole diet when it meets an AAFCO nutrient profile or passes an AAFCO feeding trial. FDA describes profiles for growth and reproduction—including growing, pregnant, and nursing animals—and for adult maintenance. Check that the stated life stage matches your pet, then ask the vet whether the food fits the animal’s individual health needs. The FDA’s complete-and-balanced pet food guidance explains these label claims.

Do not compare foods by a single guaranteed-analysis number without accounting for moisture. Those values are listed “as-fed”; canned and dry foods can have substantially different moisture levels, so a dry-matter conversion is needed for a meaningful nutrient comparison. A label comparison alone does not establish which food is appropriate for your pet.

Questions to take to the appointment

  • Is my pet’s weight and body-condition score appropriate? Which scale are you using, and what should I monitor at home?
  • What food, portion, and feeding schedule fit my pet’s age, activity, body condition, and health?
  • Should treats, table scraps, chews, supplements, or food used with medication count toward the daily plan?
  • Do my pet’s symptoms, diagnosis, medications, or supplements affect the diet?
  • Is the current food complete and balanced for this life stage, and is it suitable for my pet’s health?
  • If a food change is appropriate, how should I make it, and when should we follow up?

For a home-prepared or other unconventional diet, ask specifically how its nutritional adequacy and safety can be assessed. If the veterinarian recommends a measured portion, a kitchen scale can help you serve it consistently; it cannot determine the right food or amount.
