Can I leave my rats in the car for a few minutes?
No. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises never leaving a pet in a car, including in shade or with the windows cracked. A vehicle can heat rapidly: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says its temperature can rise almost 20°F in the first 10 minutes, even with a window cracked. That is a general vehicle-heating figure, not a rat-specific tolerance threshold or a measure of how long a rat can safely wait.
If you need to stop, take the rats with you only if the location allows it and you can keep them secure and appropriately climate-controlled. Otherwise, arrange for someone to stay with them in the air-conditioned car, or postpone the stop. Shade, an open window, an ice pack, or a thermometer does not make an unattended parked car safe.
How do I keep my pet rats cool in the car?
Plan a necessary, direct trip
Travel with rats only when there is a practical need, such as a veterinary visit. Choose a direct route, avoid unnecessary stops, and minimize total travel time. RSPCA UK recommends a quiet, air-conditioned car; keep the vehicle climate-controlled throughout the journey rather than relying on ventilation from an open window.

Position and secure the carrier
Secure the carrier in the vehicle so it cannot slide or tip. Keep it out of direct sunlight and cover it to reduce light and disturbance, while leaving enough airflow for ventilation. Do not cover openings or place the carrier where air cannot circulate.
Check the rats during the journey
Look in on the rats regularly and watch for signs that they are distressed or unwell. No reviewed guidance establishes a universal safe car temperature or an exact inspection interval for pet rats, so do not use a thermometer reading or a fixed schedule as a substitute for attentive monitoring and air conditioning. For a longer journey, NSW Department of Education guidance recommends providing pellets and vegetables to help keep rats hydrated.

What carrier should I use to transport pet rats?
Choose a solid, escape-resistant small-animal carrier that rats cannot readily chew through. NSW Department of Education advises against cardboard boxes and cloth bags because rats can chew through them. The carrier should give the animals room to lie down, stand, and change position.
- Secure and chew-resistant: Check that closures are reliable and the carrier is sturdy enough to resist escape attempts.
- Room to reposition: The rats should be able to lie down, stand, and change position.
- Ventilated: Air must continue to move freely, including when the carrier is covered.
- Easy to secure: It should stay stable in the car rather than sliding or tipping.
These criteria are more useful than a brand name: the cited guidance does not rank retail carrier models.

What if my rat is sick or has special needs?
Ask a veterinarian before travelling if a rat is already unwell or has a condition that could affect its ability to cope with the trip. The AVMA also recommends discussing travel and warm-weather safety with a veterinarian. A veterinarian can advise whether the journey should go ahead and whether the individual rat needs additional precautions.

The AVMA lists anxiousness, excessive panting, restlessness, excessive drooling, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, and collapse as signs of heat stress that warrant emergency veterinary care. This is general pet guidance, not a rat-specific diagnostic checklist. If a rat appears unwell during or after travel, contact a veterinarian promptly; do not wait for several signs to appear.

Agriculture Victoria advises regularly monitoring rats and mice when temperatures are above 30°C and discusses a frozen ice brick or drink bottle in the nesting area on hot days. That advice concerns home housing, not a safe temperature or cooling protocol for a car. It does not replace air conditioning during travel or the rule against leaving rats unattended in a vehicle.
