To adopt a rescue cat, contact the shelter or rescue you’re considering and ask about its application, meeting, paperwork, pickup, and follow-up requirements. Before choosing, compare what staff or a foster caregiver have observed about the cat with your household and routine. Prepare a quiet, secure room and familiar food and litter before pickup, then let the cat settle at its own pace. Procedures vary by organization, so confirm current details directly with yours.
How does adopting a rescue cat work?
There is no single adoption process. Some organizations offer same-day adoptions, while others take longer; the ASPCA describes shelters and rescues as facility-based, foster-based, or a combination of both. Ask the organization you choose what it requires and when each step happens. Its current rules—not another shelter’s timeline—will determine how you apply and bring a cat home.
Confirm whether you need to submit an application, meet the cat, provide references or other paperwork, schedule pickup, or complete follow-up after adoption. If the cat is in a foster home, ask how a meeting can be arranged and who can answer questions about daily behavior. For an overview of how animal-welfare organizations operate, see the ASPCA’s adoption tips.
What should I ask before adopting a cat?
Ask staff or the foster caregiver what they have actually seen, and distinguish those observations from what is unknown. A cat may act differently in a shelter or during a brief meeting than in a settled home. Best Friends Animal Society cat expert Samantha Bell puts it simply: “Every cat is an individual.” Treat descriptions as useful clues, not promises about how the cat will behave with you.

- What have you observed about the cat’s activity level, sociability, and comfort with handling?
- What kind of home or daily routine seems to suit this cat?
- What is known about the cat’s history, and what remains unknown?
- What food and litter is the cat currently using?
- What medical care has the organization provided, and what records or follow-up will I receive?
- Has the cat lived with other cats, dogs, or children? What have you observed about those interactions?
For medical questions, request the records available from the organization and discuss them with a veterinarian. Do not assume that an unknown history means a particular health status or that a brief observation guarantees how the cat will respond to children, other animals, or handling.
How do I choose a cat that fits my home and routine?
Think about your daily schedule, activity level, household, and what kind of companionship you can offer. Best Friends recommends considering whether you are looking for an adult cat or kitten, a playful or lap-oriented companion, and a more independent or social personality. These preferences can help guide a conversation, but they are not traits that can be reliably promised from a shelter visit.

- Energy and routine: Ask what activity the cat seems to enjoy and consider whether it fits your typical day.
- Social and handling preferences: Ask how the cat responds to people and handling in the settings staff or caregivers know.
- Household experience: Find out whether the cat has lived with children or other animals, and separate documented experience from unknown history.
- Disclosed care needs: Ask what the organization knows about the cat’s health or care and what records are available.
Best Friends’ cat adoption guidance encourages adopters to consult staff or foster caregivers while keeping in mind that cats may not show their full personalities in a shelter environment.

What do I need before bringing a rescue cat home?
Set up a quiet, secure starting room before pickup. Have food, water, a litter box, and places to hide available there. A smaller starting space gives the cat a chance to observe its new surroundings without being expected to explore the whole home immediately.
Gather these basics:
- A secure carrier for transport
- Food and water bowls
- The food the cat currently eats
- A litter box and the cat’s familiar litter, if available
- A scratching post or pad
- Toys and bedding or a blanket
- A hiding place, such as a box; a perch if suitable for the room
Starting with familiar food and litter can make the transition more consistent. You can ask the organization what the cat uses before pickup. No particular brand is required. Best Friends’ new-cat checklist covers starter supplies and the quiet-room approach.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How long does it take a rescue cat to adjust?
There is no dependable timetable for an individual cat. The ASPCA describes adjustment across the first days, weeks, and months as a broad guide, not a schedule every cat follows. Best Friends notes that some cats may need several weeks before they are ready to explore the whole home. Hiding or taking time to approach people can be part of settling in; it is not, by itself, misbehavior.

Give the cat room to observe, keep daily routines calm and consistent, and allow exploration and interaction at the cat’s pace. Avoid pulling a hiding cat out or forcing contact. Expand access to the home gradually as the cat appears comfortable. For guidance on welcoming a new pet, see the ASPCA’s adoption tips and Best Friends’ new-cat checklist. If health or behavior concerns arise, contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than relying on a general adjustment timeline.
When should I arrange veterinary care?
Establish care with a nearby veterinarian soon after adoption and bring any records the organization provides. An introductory visit gives you a chance to review the cat’s history and ask for advice suited to its age, activity, and health. Feeding needs vary with those factors, so ask the veterinarian for individualized guidance rather than assuming one diet or schedule fits every cat. The ASPCA’s cat-care guidance discusses the need to tailor care to the individual animal.
