The goal is steady, healthy development—not faster growth. Check the package’s nutritional adequacy statement for wording that includes growth of large-size dogs, then ask your veterinarian to tailor portions and the eventual transition to your puppy.
Why large-breed growth nutrition matters
The American Kennel Club says Great Pyrenees can reach 32 inches at the shoulder and often weigh more than 100 pounds as adults. Their eventual size makes large-size growth guidance relevant from puppyhood. AKC’s Great Pyrenees breed profile
Large and giant breed puppies grow for longer than smaller dogs, and their calorie and nutrient intake matters during development. Overnutrition and excessively rapid growth are associated with developmental orthopedic problems, including hip and elbow dysplasia and osteochondrosis. These are risk factors, not a prediction that an individual puppy will become ill. AKC’s large-breed nutrition guidance
Large-breed puppy formulas are designed with that growth profile in mind. AKC describes them as generally less energy-dense and lower in certain nutrients, including calcium and phosphorus, than standard puppy diets; exact levels vary by product. The point is to support appropriate growth, not to restrict a puppy’s nutrition or make it grow slowly through underfeeding.

How to check whether a food fits
Look for the nutritional adequacy statement, usually on the back or side of the package. It identifies the life stage for which the food is complete and balanced. For a Great Pyrenees puppy, look for a statement that supports growth and includes large-size dogs. AAFCO’s consumer guidance explains that label wording may distinguish growth foods that include large-size dogs—defined in that language as dogs expected to weigh 70 pounds or more as adults—from foods that exclude them. AAFCO consumer guidance on pet food labels
Do not rely on the words “puppy,” “large breed,” or “all life stages” on the front of the bag alone. Read the full adequacy statement on the current package, since labels and formulas can change.

- Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb and Rice dry dog food; REAL PASTURE-RAISED LAMB is the #1 ingredient; specially formulated with carefully determined protein and mineral content to support the needs of LARGE BREED PUPPIES
- Growth coverage: Confirm that the adequacy statement includes growth of large-size dogs.
- Calories and portions: Check the calorie content and feeding directions for your puppy’s age and weight. Treat the suggested amount as a starting point, then have your veterinarian assess body condition and adjust portions as needed.
- Adequacy substantiation: The label may say the food meets a nutrient profile or that it was substantiated by feeding trials. These are different ways of supporting a nutritional adequacy claim; neither guarantees a particular outcome for every puppy.
- Individual needs: Get veterinary advice if your puppy has a medical condition, poor growth, persistent digestive symptoms, or a prescribed diet.
Feed measured meals and avoid growth supplements unless advised
Use measured meals rather than leaving food out continuously as the default. AKC recommends monitoring a large-breed puppy’s weight and avoiding free-feeding, which can make it harder to manage intake. Your veterinarian can help you judge whether your puppy is maintaining an appropriate body condition as it grows. AKC’s large-breed nutrition guidance
Do not add calcium or other growth supplements to a complete and balanced puppy food unless your veterinarian directs you to. More is not automatically better: mineral balance is part of why a growth formula is designed for its stated life stage.

When to transition from puppy food
There is no single transition age established for every Great Pyrenees. Large and giant breeds may take longer to mature; AKC recommends keeping dogs expected to weigh at least 70 pounds on an appropriate large-breed growth diet through their growth period. Great Pyrenees are susceptible to gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat. AKC notes that multiple smaller meals and avoiding vigorous exercise around mealtimes may help reduce risk, but they cannot guarantee prevention and the causes are not fully understood.
