There is no evidence-backed daily minute target that fits every giant-breed dog. The right amount depends on age, health, fitness, temperament, and how the dog responds. Give growing puppies regular, self-paced activity rather than forced endurance; build an adult dog’s routine around its condition; and adapt exercise for seniors or dogs with joint disease.

Why there is no single daily exercise quota

Giant-breed dogs vary too much for one number of minutes to be a reliable prescription. Cornell’s canine weight-management guidance says there are no firm data for an ideal activity level, and recommends individualizing activity rather than relying on a universal target: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine on canine obesity.

Use your dog’s age, medical conditions, current fitness, and response during and after activity to shape the routine. A puppy’s needs and risks differ from those of a mature dog, while a diagnosis such as hip dysplasia or age-related mobility loss calls for a more tailored plan.

Exercise for a growing giant-breed puppy

Favor self-paced, age-appropriate activity

Puppies need opportunities to explore, walk at a comfortable pace, train, and play. Let the puppy pause or stop rather than insisting on a set duration or speed. VCA recommends self-regulated play and cautions against long jogs or hikes, jumping hurdles, and competitive agility before maturity: VCA’s guidance on puppy exercise and growth plates. Cornell likewise recommends regular age-appropriate exercise while cautioning against repetitive high-impact or forced activity during rapid growth: Cornell on panosteitis in dogs.

Be cautious with repetitive impact and endurance

Large and giant dogs may continue growing well beyond the early puppy months. The American Kennel Club quotes its Chief Veterinary Officer, Jerry Klein, as saying that growth plates in large and giant breeds may fuse as late as 16 to 18 months, compared with 6 to 9 months in toy dogs. Klein cautions that constant, percussive activity such as regimented running or jogging on concrete or asphalt could affect growth plates and developing joints. These are general developmental statements, not a way to determine when an individual puppy is ready for strenuous exercise: AKC’s large-breed care guidance.

VCA estimates that giant dogs may take around 1.5 years to mature on its exercise page, while another VCA page notes some may keep growing until about 24 months. These are estimates, not automatic clearance dates. Breed and individual development differ, so ask your veterinarian before introducing long-distance running, strenuous hikes, jumping, or other high-impact training: VCA on exercising a 9-month-old puppy.

Exercise for a mature giant-breed dog

For a healthy adult, establish a consistent routine of activity the dog can comfortably sustain, then adjust it to the dog’s condition and response. If increasing activity, do so gradually. Cornell advises stopping an increase if the dog is having difficulty breathing or is clearly trying to slow down, and consulting a veterinarian about possible health issues.

Do not treat maturity as proof that a dog is fit for any exercise. Current conditioning and health still matter: a dog accustomed to short walks needs a different starting point from one already comfortable with longer activity. A veterinarian can help set appropriate limits when your dog has a medical condition or you are unsure how to progress.

Adjust activity for joint disease, reduced mobility, or age

Hip dysplasia and other joint concerns

For dogs with hip dysplasia, Cornell identifies walking and swimming as examples of low-impact exercise, alongside weight management and veterinary care. Ask the dog’s veterinarian which activities and intensity suit its condition; the examples are not a prescription for every dog with hip problems: Cornell’s guide to canine hip dysplasia.

Senior dogs or dogs with limited mobility

Match activity to what the dog can do comfortably now. Cornell recommends discussing safe activities during wellness visits, choosing routes and distances suited to the dog, and watching for changes: Cornell on senior dog enrichment. A new limp, stiffness, reluctance to move, or difficulty breathing merits veterinary advice rather than pushing the dog to meet a target.

How to make a routine safer and more practical

  • Let comfort guide duration. Use walks and free play the dog can sustain without being pushed through clear fatigue; keep puppy play self-directed.
  • Limit intense activity around meals. VCA advises avoiding intense exercise immediately before or after meals in its large- and giant-breed nutrition guidance: VCA on nutrition for large and giant breeds.
  • Use indoor enrichment when outdoor conditions are unsafe. During poor air quality, Cornell suggests keeping dogs indoors and using suitable food puzzles or long-lasting treats. These provide enrichment, not a replacement for physical exercise: Cornell on dog safety during poor air quality or wildfire smoke.
  • Stop when your dog shows trouble. Breathing difficulty or obvious slowing during an activity increase is a reason to stop and contact your veterinarian, not to press on.
