To get a second opinion, ask your current veterinary clinic in writing for the records relevant to your pet’s condition, then arrange for them to reach the next veterinarian before the appointment. Ask the receiving practice what it needs and confirm local rules on access, fees, timing, and diagnostic images: these can vary by state.
What to request from your current veterinarian
Send a clear written request to the clinic that treated your pet. Identify your pet and the relevant visits, and say whether you want the records sent to you, directly to the second-opinion practice, or both. Request the materials that could help the next veterinarian understand the case:
- Examination notes or a record summary
- Diagnoses and treatment details
- Test results
- Medication information
- Diagnostic images and related reports, if available
What a clinic must provide directly to an owner, how images are handled, and whether a copying fee applies depend on the jurisdiction and the clinic’s process. California’s Veterinary Medical Board, for example, recommends making a written request and says a duplication cost may apply. Its guidance on radiographs describes release to another veterinarian when that veterinarian requests them with the owner’s authorization; this is California-specific, not a nationwide rule. California’s regulator recommends a written request, and referral guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) supports coordinating records with the receiving practice. California Veterinary Medical Board consumer FAQs; AAHA, Section 3: Responsibilities Before Referral
Coordinate with the second-opinion veterinarian
Contact the prospective practice before the appointment. Ask what the consultation includes, what to bring, whether records and images should be sent in advance, whether image files need a particular format, and who will handle follow-up. Ask the receiving veterinarian to explain whether the appointment is a consultation or a referral involving a more coordinated transfer of care, whether an examination is required, and how results will be shared with your current clinic.

Sending records ahead gives the next veterinarian a chance to review the history and prior findings. AAHA referral guidance says the receiving specialist reviews records from the primary care practice before the appointment to help avoid unnecessary repeated testing. Referral care also depends on communication between the referring and receiving practices. Confirm which practice is responsible for communicating results and arranging follow-up so you know whom to contact after the visit. AAHA, Section 4: Responsibilities After Referral

Know that record-access rules vary by state
There is no safe nationwide promise about how quickly records must be provided or whether an owner can obtain diagnostic images directly. The AVMA’s state-law compilation illustrates that veterinary record rules differ across states. Check your state veterinary board and current statutes or regulations for the rule that applies where your clinic is located. AVMA veterinary records state-law resources
The wording and scope of state rules differ. California’s consumer FAQ says a practice should provide a summary within a “reasonable” amount of time and notes that a duplication cost may apply. Florida’s 2026 statute calls for furnishing records in a timely manner and includes X-rays. A Nevada regulation surfaced in the state board’s official search results specifies 48 hours under that provision and says diagnostic images need not be provided to the owner. These examples are not interchangeable; verify the current rule for your state rather than relying on another state’s deadline or image policy. If a request is delayed or denied, keep your written request and the clinic’s response. Ask the practice which rule or policy applies and what process it requires, then confirm the answer with your state veterinary board. Avoid assuming a deadline from another state applies to your case.
If your veterinarian has moved or the practice has closed, California’s Veterinary Medical Board recommends contacting the board for the facility’s current address of record and sending the written request there. That is California-specific guidance; ask your own state board how to proceed elsewhere. California Veterinary Medical Board consumer FAQs
