How to Rehome Pet Rats Responsibly

Contact the original organization and nearby rat rescues first. Confirm intake, waitlists, fees, and transport; disclose each rat’s history and make a safe handover plan.

If you can no longer care for your pet rats, start by asking whether practical support could help you keep them. If rehoming is necessary, contact the organization they came from and nearby rat rescues, then confirm current intake and transport arrangements before making plans. Share what you know about each rat, screen any direct adopter carefully, and never abandon rats or release them outdoors.

Can support help you keep your rats?

A move, housing restriction, allergy, financial strain, or health problem can make rat care difficult. Before arranging a surrender, ask local rat rescues whether they know of temporary help with supplies, housing, transportation, temperament, or veterinary needs. DFW Rat Rescue, for example, describes a PASS program intended to help some owners keep their rats; it is one organization’s program, not a service available everywhere. Check with the organization about its current options.

Where can you surrender pet rats?

Begin with the shelter, rescue, or breeder the rats came from, if known. Then contact rat-specific rescues in your area. If none can help, ask local animal shelters, animal control, or a veterinarian for referrals. The CDC also lists local or regional rescues, animal control, veterinarians, and pet shops as possible contacts when an owner can no longer care for a small mammal. CDC small-mammal guidance and Seattle Animal Shelter’s rehoming guidance offer examples, but their procedures are not universal.

Ask about intake before traveling

Capacity, service area, wait times, fees, and transport help vary. Contact the organization directly and ask:

Homey Pet Rat Cage, Small Animal Cage for Ferret, Chinchilla, Guinea Pig
  • Small Animal Cage: This 3-tier critter cage measures 25"L x 17"W x 38"H with a 0.65-inch wire spacing, perfect for housing small pet rodents such as rats (including fancy and Dumbo rats), ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, and small rabbits/bunny (such as Holland Lop, Netherland Dwarf, and Lionhead)
  • Anti-Spill Guard Design: The rat cage bottom features a splash guard that keeps bedding, urine, and food debris neatly contained. It helps prevent messes, reduces cleaning frequency, and keeps your home clean
  • Non-Slip Ramp & Spacious Platform: The wide platform offers a comfortable resting area for your pet, while the non-slip textured ramp ensures safety. Its gentle incline prevents falls and injuries, helping your pet climb with confidence and stay active and healthy
  • Easy to Clean: Equipped with detachable, paw-friendly plastic floor grates that filter out food debris and waste, keeping the habitat clean and your pet tidy. The 1-inch removable tray holds more litter, while the rounded-corner base eliminates dead spots for effortless cleaning. All parts of the chinchilla cage are fully detachable—simply release the clips and lift the wire frame to separate the base for quick, thorough maintenance
  • Escape-Proof Door Lock: Features a wide front door that allows easy access for your furry friends. The upgraded two-finger locking system of ferret cage provides double protection—preventing clever escapes and keeping your pet safe from other animals, so you can stay worry-free
  • Does it accept domestic rats, and is there a waitlist?
  • What area does it serve, and can it help arrange transport?
  • Are there fees, and what records or supplies should you bring?
  • Can it assess health and temperament or match the rats with adopters?
  • What support or return options are available if an adoption does not work out?

DFW Rat Rescue reports a surrender waitlist and suggests transport volunteers or direct adopter-finding when getting rats to its Texas location is difficult. Seattle Animal Shelter describes an appointment process and a waitlist. These details can change; confirm them with the organization before making plans. If it cannot take your rats now, ask for referrals rather than leaving them without a safe placement.

What should you tell a rat rescue or adopter?

Give a clear account of each rat’s known history so the receiving organization can plan appropriate care and a suitable placement. Include:

  • Medical concerns, symptoms, treatments, veterinary records, and possible pregnancy.
  • Temperament, comfort with handling, and any known behavior or bite history.
  • Where the rats came from, what they eat, and their current care routine.
  • Any uncertainties, rather than guesses presented as facts.

Tell the organization about symptoms, bites, possible pregnancy, or unknown origin before transfer. AusRFS, a rat-rescue service in Victoria, Australia, says it shares known information such as age, medical condition, temperament, and history with adopters after health checks and foster observation. Its specific process illustrates what a rescue may do; other organizations’ procedures differ. See AusRFS’s rescue and adoption information.

How do you vet a direct adopter?

If a rescue cannot take the rats and you are considering placing them yourself, look for a committed home able to meet their needs—not simply the first person who responds. Ask how the adopter plans to house and care for them, whether they can access appropriate veterinary care, and what they will do if the placement fails. Be candid about health and behavior concerns; do not promise that a new home will resolve them. For difficult medical or behavioral situations, seek advice from a veterinarian or rat rescue.

Agree in advance on what happens if the adopter can no longer keep the rats. Adoption agreements, care information, matching, and return policies are safeguards used by some rescues and are worth asking about; they are not universal legal requirements. AusRFS describes a lifetime return policy and placing rats only in homes suited to the particular animal. That is its policy, not a guarantee that every organization offers the same follow-up.

How should you prepare for the handover?

  1. Confirm the recipient and appointment. Agree on the transfer date, location, transport plan, and any records or supplies to bring.
  2. Pass along the rats’ history. Share the information above, including what is unknown, and provide available veterinary records.
  3. Keep the transfer safe. Use a secure carrier and coordinate directly with the receiving organization or adopter about handling and arrival.
  4. Record the placement. Make sure both parties know who is taking responsibility for the rats and how to get in touch if a problem arises.

What health and hygiene information matters?

The CDC says small mammals can carry germs even when they look clean and healthy. It recommends handwashing after handling animals or their supplies, routine veterinary care, and finding an exotic veterinarian because some small mammals need specialized care. The CDC also advises pregnant women to avoid handling pet rodents when possible because of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus risk. These precautions are especially relevant to discuss with a prospective adopter if the household includes children under five, adults 65 or older, or people with weakened immune systems. Read the CDC’s small-mammal health guidance.

Keep rats and their equipment away from food-preparation areas, supervise them outside their habitat, and clean hands after handling, consistent with CDC advice. Do not apply a single quarantine period to every household transfer: the National Fancy Rat Society’s three-week minimum applies to breeders handling rats from backyard or feeder breeders with unknown or questionable history. For a household placement, ask the receiving rescue or a veterinarian what precautions fit the rats’ circumstances. The society says dumped rats should go to an equipped rescue agency. Read the National Fancy Rat Society’s quarantine guidance.

Why do people rehome rats?

Housing and owner-related difficulties are among the reasons found in a study of rat admissions to the BC SPCA. Published in 2022, the peer-reviewed analysis examined five years of province-wide admission and outcome records, covering 3,392 rat admissions. It is a historical dataset from British Columbia, not a current estimate for other regions. Read the study in Animals.

For context on rescue workload, the Australian Rat Fanciers Society Rescue Service reports that it has taken in and rehomed more than 10,000 rats over 21 years, averaging around 200–300 a year. Its webpage does not state when those figures were published, and they describe that organization rather than rescue activity generally. AusRFS provides its rescue information here.

Never abandon pet rats outdoors

The CDC’s instruction is direct: “Never release a pet into the wild.” Pet small mammals are not adapted to living in the wild and can damage ecosystems. If you cannot keep your rats and no organization can take them immediately, keep them safely housed while you seek referrals or transport help; do not release them outdoors.
