Look on its website for a “Happy Tails,” “Adoption Stories,” or “Success Stories” page and use the form or email address it gives. If you can’t find one, contact the shelter and ask where updates go. Send a short, truthful story with a recent photo, and check how the organization may reuse it.
Step-by-step: sending your update
1. Find the right organization and channel
Use the shelter or rescue that handled your adoption, not a different organization that might not route the story. Search its site for “Happy Tails,” “success story,” “alumni update,” or “adoption update.” Many shelters publish submission instructions, including Cape Ann Animal Aid, Pasadena Humane, Humane Society of Broward County, Nevada SPCA, Friends of Homeless Animals, San Antonio Humane Society and Humane Society of Sarasota County. Recheck your shelter’s own page before sending, because forms, upload limits and consent text can change.
2. Include details the shelter can use
Fields differ by organization, so follow the actual form. Typical requests are your name and email, the pet’s current name, and sometimes the name the pet had at the shelter, the species, or an approximate adoption date. Cape Ann Animal Aid asks for the pet’s name before and after adoption plus an approximate adoption date. Broward County accepts an approximate date and asks how you first saw the pet. Sarasota asks for both the shelter name and the current name.
3. Tell a specific, truthful story
Describe how your pet is settling in: a favorite habit or routine, a milestone, or what the pet has added to your household. Keep it personal and accurate, and don’t embellish medical or behavioral claims. The pages reviewed set no universal length or format, and Cape Ann Animal Aid notes it may edit stories for clarity, content or length.

4. Add a recent photo, and video only if accepted
Several shelters request photos. Broward County also accepts a video link. Nevada SPCA takes a photo through its form or by email, and Sarasota invites one or two photos by email. San Antonio’s form requires a file and lists an email address for people who have trouble uploading. If an upload fails, use the email alternative. As general good practice (not a rule in these forms), get permission from anyone identifiable in the picture.
5. Read the media-use terms
Your story may appear on a website, social media, an email or print newsletter, or other communications. Pasadena Humane’s form asks consent to use your update and photos across its listed channels. Cape Ann Animal Aid and Broward County both say they won’t publish your full name. These terms belong to those organizations, not to shelters in general, so read your own shelter’s wording.

6. Don’t count on publication or a deadline
The pages describe possible publication or an invitation to share, not a guarantee. None of the instructions reviewed sets a deadline, and some feature pets adopted years earlier. Unless your shelter asked for a follow-up by a certain time, send it when you’re ready.

What to write: a quick checklist
- Open with the pet’s current name and the name it had at the shelter.
- Give one or two concrete moments rather than a general “she’s doing great.”
- Mention the approximate adoption date if the form asks.
- Choose a clear, recent photo of the pet.
- Tick or confirm the consent box only if you’re comfortable with every listed use.
Shelters themselves ask in these words: Cape Ann Animal Aid, “Do you have a Cape Ann Animal Aid adoption success story you’d like to share?” and San Antonio Humane Society, “Have you adopted a pet from the San Antonio Humane Society? If so, we would love to hear how she/he is doing now!”
