After a rainy walk, dry your Golden Retriever with a towel, check the dense coat down to the skin, and clean only muddy or dirty areas. A rainy walk by itself usually does not call for a full shampoo bath.
What to do when you get home
- Set up before your dog comes inside. Keep a towel by the entry and choose a warm spot where your dog can dry. If it is safe, let your dog shake off outside or in an easy-to-clean area.
- Blot with a towel. Press the towel into the coat to absorb water rather than rubbing vigorously. Work over the body, legs, chest, and tail, using a clean section of towel as it gets wet. Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital also recommends pressing rather than rubbing: its wet-dog guidance.
- Clean the paws. Wipe mud and debris from each paw, including between the toes, where moisture and grit can linger. Check for trapped twigs or other debris as you go.
- Inspect the coat and skin. Part the feathering and look for mud, burrs, tangles, and dampness near the skin. A Golden Retriever’s thick, water-repellent double coat can shed rain on the surface while the undercoat remains damp; AKC grooming guidance recommends thorough towel drying and lists a canine cool-air dryer among useful supplies: AKC Golden Retriever grooming guidance.
Choose the drying method that suits your dog
| Option | What it does well | Limitations and safe use |
|---|---|---|
| Towel blotting | Quiet and simple; absorbs surface water and works well as the first step. | May not dry a dense undercoat fully. Press and blot rather than scrubbing the coat. |
| Dog dryer | Can help finish a long, thick coat after towel drying. | Use a cool or low, gentle setting, keep the dryer moving and at least a foot away, and avoid the face and ears. Stop if your dog is frightened by the sound or airflow. |
AKC advises towel drying after damp-weather walks and says a dog dryer can help with long or thick coats; keep airflow away from the face and ears (AKC dog-drying guidance). Its bathing guidance likewise recommends absorbing water with a towel and, if needed, using a dog-made dryer on a gentle setting at least a foot away (AKC bathing guidance).
Move the air over the coat instead of holding it in one spot, and check the skin and undercoat as you go. If your dog dislikes the dryer, do not force it: continue with towels and allow your dog to dry in a warm place.
When to wash—and when not to
Rain alone is not a reason to shampoo your dog. If only the paws or a patch of coat is muddy, clean that area rather than bathing the whole dog. For a shampoo wash, use one made for pets, rinse thoroughly, and avoid leaving residue on the skin, which can irritate it. Do not substitute human shampoo.

Check ears and watch for skin irritation
While drying, look at the ears for visible dirt, redness, moisture, or discharge. Do not routinely clean healthy ears just because the dog got wet. Cornell’s ear-care guidance says healthy ears need cleaning only when dirt or debris is present and warns that overcleaning can irritate them: Cornell canine ear-care guidance.
Pay attention to persistent redness, bumps, sores, unusual odor, discharge, or excessive scratching. Wet or matted hair can hold moisture against the skin, and Cornell notes that Golden Retrievers are among the breeds commonly affected by hot spots (Cornell hot-spot guidance). Contact your veterinarian if these signs appear or persist; this routine is grooming advice, not a diagnosis.
