If an unfamiliar dog seems threatening, stop, stay calm, avoid direct eye contact and never run. Give the dog space to pass; if it knocks you down, curl into a ball and protect your head, neck and face. If you are bitten or scratched, wash the wound promptly and seek medical advice when the injury or rabies risk warrants it.

What to do when a threatening dog approaches

  1. Stop and stay calm. Stand still and avoid sudden movements. Do not run, scream or shout; these reactions can escalate the encounter or trigger pursuit.
  2. Turn slightly sideways and avoid staring. Do not face the dog head-on or make direct eye contact. If you need to speak, use a calm, firm voice. The CDC suggests a firm, deep “no” or “go home.”
  3. Give the dog room. Wait for it to pass. If you need to create more distance, back away slowly until it is out of sight; do not turn and run.
  4. If you fall or are knocked down, curl up. Tuck your head, cover your ears and neck, and protect your face.

The CDC summarizes its approach this way: “If an unfamiliar dog approaches you, stay still, be calm, and avoid direct eye contact with the dog.” These actions are safety guidance, not a guarantee that a dog will not bite.

How to read the situation without escalating it

A tucked tail, stiff body, staring, growling or snapping can signal that a dog is afraid, feels threatened or wants to be left alone. Treat these as reasons to give the animal space, not as an invitation to approach, pet it or test its reaction. Focus on the dog’s behavior rather than its size or breed: the AVMA cautions that neither reliably predicts whether a dog will bite.

Do not approach a loose dog or try to break up a dog fight. When it is safe to do so, contact local animal control if a dog is loose or appears to be in trouble.

Ask a clinician about rabies and tetanus

Seek medical advice for a serious or deep wound, signs of infection, uncertainty about the dog’s rabies vaccination, or if more than five years have passed since the injured person’s last tetanus shot. Rabies risk depends on the specific incident and location. A healthcare provider can consult local public health officials about whether rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed; do not try to determine eligibility on your own.

Report the bite and collect details if possible

Report a dog bite to local animal control or police. If you can do so safely, get the owner’s contact information and the dog’s rabies vaccination details. Reporting procedures vary by location.
