Teach the mat behavior before you add a workout: first reward your dog for choosing the mat and relaxing there in a quiet room, then build time and introduce your movements a little at a time. If your dog gets up or becomes excited, make the next repetition easier rather than asking them to hold still through a harder one.
Set up a calm place to practice
Choose a comfortable mat, bed, or washable blanket your dog can lie on easily. Start in a familiar, quiet room, with the mat near your chair. You do not need a special product to begin. VCA describes “Go to Mat” as teaching a dog to move to a designated spot, such as a mat or bed, and settle there. VCA Animal Hospitals’ settle-and-calm guidance also mentions a remote-operated treat dispenser as an optional way to deliver rewards while you return to your chair.
Teach the mat before adding exercise
Reward voluntary interest
Let your dog investigate the mat. Mark and reward small steps: looking toward it, approaching, stepping onto it, and standing on it. Then reward lying down. If your dog is unsure, go back to an easier step instead of luring or pushing them onto the mat. Veterinary Partner’s mat-training guide recommends marking positive interaction and gradually shaping closer approximations to lying down.
Reward relaxation, not just a down
Once your dog lies on the mat, quietly place a treat near their front paws while they remain there. Look for signs of softening: shifting weight onto a hip, resting the head or chin, or lying on their side. The goal is a dog who is becoming comfortable, not one who is tense and waiting for the next treat. VCA recommends watching body language, reinforcing relaxed postures, and gradually lengthening the time between rewards.

Add a cue when the behavior is predictable
When your dog regularly begins to lie down and soften, say a cue such as “settle” or “relax” just before the behavior starts, then reward the relaxed posture. Adding the word too early can make it harder to connect the cue with the behavior. VCA’s guidance and Today’s Veterinary Practice’s relaxation handout both describe introducing a cue once relaxed behavior is emerging or predictable.
Build duration while your dog stays comfortable
Keep rewarding while your dog remains on the mat. At first, treat after only a brief pause; then gradually wait longer. Today’s Veterinary Practice suggests increasing waits in 5-to-10-second increments and moving on to distance work after a dog can stay on the mat for approximately 3 to 5 minutes. These are instructional steps from its handout, not a guaranteed timetable or a requirement for every dog. If your dog repeatedly gets up, shorten the interval and reward sooner.

Add your workout movements one at a time
Once your dog can relax on the mat for short periods in the quiet setup, introduce small movements. Change one variable at a time where practical: how long the dog settles, how far away you are, how energetic your movement is, or how distracting the room is.

This sequence applies the veterinary sources’ general advice to add distractions gradually; they do not prescribe a particular workout routine. VCA advises starting from the beginning as each new distraction is introduced, while Veterinary Partner recommends gradual changes in location and distraction.

Teach a release cue such as “all done” so your dog can distinguish settling from being free to leave the mat. Give the cue calmly when the exercise period is over. Veterinary Partner’s mat-training guidance recommends teaching a release cue as part of the station behavior.

Know when to slow down or get help
A dog who notices a new movement and then relaxes again may simply need more practice at that level. If your dog stays intensely alert, repeatedly leaves, or appears distressed, reduce the challenge and return to a step where they can relax. Do not insist on a settle when the dog is not relaxed enough to offer the behavior voluntarily; Veterinary Partner’s guidance on teaching relaxation makes this distinction.
VCA notes that excitement, fear, frustration, anxiety, or physical discomfort can make settling difficult. If your dog is uncomfortable or progress is not steady, reduce the difficulty and consult your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional. A new mat exercise should not be used to push through distress or suspected pain.

- One comfortable target: a mat, dog bed, or washable blanket.
- Small rewards: enough to reinforce the early steps and calm behavior.
- Optional: a remote-operated treat dispenser if delivering rewards from a distance is useful.
The veterinary sources describe reward-based mat training and relaxation exercises; they do not establish a particular mat brand or product as necessary, or report a specific success rate for settling while a person exercises.
