Choose a Turkish Angora breeder by verifying records and practices—not by relying on a directory listing or promises alone. Ask for the kitten’s veterinary history, the parents’ health or genetic records, details about how kittens are raised, references, and a written contract. If you’re considering a white kitten, ask specifically about hearing evaluation and request any available BAER results.

How do you find and vet Turkish Angora breeders?

  1. Start with a breed organization, then verify the breeder. TICA’s breeder directory includes Turkish Angora listings. Treat a listing or registry affiliation as a lead, not an endorsement. A responsible breeder should also ask about your household and the home you can provide.
  2. Request records instead of relying on verbal assurances. Ask for the kitten’s veterinary records and the sire’s and dam’s health or genetic records. Ask which screening is appropriate for those particular lines and request copies or otherwise verifiable documentation. The sources do not establish a universal Turkish Angora testing panel, so a claimed generic panel should not be treated as an official breed requirement.
  3. Ask how the kitten has been cared for. Find out how kittens are raised, which veterinary visits, deworming and vaccinations they have received, and what food and care they currently need. TICA advises buyers to discuss the breeder’s methods and the individual kitten’s personality.
  4. See the cats and check references. If practical, visit the cattery to observe the cats’ living conditions and meet the parents. If a visit is not possible, ask to see the parents by video. Request references from previous buyers and ask them about documentation, communication and support after the sale.
  5. Read the paperwork before paying. The agreement should state what the health guarantee covers and for how long, return or rehoming terms, and each party’s responsibilities. If the kitten is being sold with registration, confirm which documents the named registry requires. CFA’s registration overview lists a certified three-generation pedigree for Turkish Angora registration.
  6. Use cautious payment practices. TICA warns buyers not to pay in full before choosing a specific kitten and cautions against wire transfers and gift cards. Verify the breeder’s identity and the kitten’s details through an independent channel; do not let pressure or urgency replace records and a written agreement.
  7. Arrange an independent veterinary exam. TICA recommends that your own veterinarian examine the kitten within a few days of purchase. A health guarantee is limited to its written terms; it cannot ensure that a cat will never develop a medical problem.

What health tests should you ask about?

Ask the breeder what health or genetic screening has been done for the kitten’s parents, why it is relevant to those lines, and whether you can review the records. The official sources reviewed do not name a standard health-testing panel required for every Turkish Angora, so evaluate the breeder’s explanation and documentation rather than insisting on an unsupported one-size-fits-all list.

For a white Turkish Angora, ask about hearing

CFA says Turkish Angoras are not generally known for specific health problems, while noting that white cats—especially blue-eyed cats—can be prone to deafness. CFA also notes that some places require BAER hearing tests for white kittens. TICA explains that white cats may have full or partial deafness and that a BAER test determines hearing status. Coat or eye color alone does not establish an individual kitten’s hearing: ask whether testing was done and request the result if available. See the CFA Turkish Angora overview and TICA Turkish Angora breed information.

What should a Turkish Angora kitten contract cover?

Get the agreement in writing and read it before sending payment. TICA’s buyer guidance says, “A knowledgeable breeder sells a kitten only with a written contract that includes a health guarantee.” Check the exact terms rather than assuming the phrase “health guarantee” provides a particular remedy.

  • What conditions or circumstances the guarantee covers, and its duration.
  • What the buyer must do if a health concern arises, including any deadlines or veterinary documentation required.
  • Whether the breeder will take the cat back or assist with rehoming, and under what conditions.
  • Responsibilities for veterinary care, registration and any other agreed obligations.
  • The kitten’s identifying details and the records or registration documents being provided.

TICA also cautions that no one can guarantee a kitten will never have a medical problem; its guidance says that a knowledgeable breeder’s commitment to ethical, responsible breeding increases the chances of a healthy, well-adjusted kitten. The written contract defines the breeder’s actual commitments.

How can you compare breeders consistently?

Use the same criteria for every breeder you contact so that a polished website or persuasive conversation does not outweigh missing evidence.

What to compare What to look for
Evidence Clear kitten veterinary records, parental health or genetic records, and pedigree or registration documents where applicable.
Care A clear account of the cats’ living environment, kitten socialization and preparation, plus willingness to arrange an in-person or video view of the parents.
Transparency and support Specific answers, references, follow-up availability, and thoughtful questions about the kitten’s future home.
Contract and payment Written health coverage and duration, return terms, payment timing, and a secure payment method.
Individual kitten fit The kitten’s personality and health history, including documented hearing evaluation when relevant.

What are warning signs when buying a kitten online?

  • The seller demands full payment before you have chosen a specific kitten or pressures you to act immediately.
  • They will not provide veterinary or parent records, explain how the kitten is raised, or put the agreement in writing.
  • They discourage you from verifying their identity, viewing the cats, contacting references, or arranging an independent veterinary exam.
  • They insist on a wire transfer or gift card rather than a payment method you can verify and document.

One warning sign does not, on its own, prove fraud, but it is a reason to pause and seek verifiable information before proceeding.
