Prepare a quiet retreat, make the home safe and easy to supervise, and keep the first week calm and predictable. Let your adopted dog settle at its own pace; introduce children and resident pets gradually, and tailor precautions to the individual dog’s history and behavior. A checklist supports a safer transition, but no breed label or preparation plan can guarantee how a dog will behave.

Before pickup: learn about the dog and set up the home

Ask the rescue or shelter what to expect

Before bringing your dog home, ask what is known about its daily routine, current food, health records, and experience with children and other animals. Find out what post-adoption support is available. This information can help you match the dog’s needs to your household and plan introductions; some details may be unknown. The AVMA’s dog-bite prevention guidance emphasizes matching a dog’s temperament and needs to the family and home.

Choose a retreat and limit access

Set up a quiet, low-traffic place where the dog can rest without being approached. It might be a room, a bed in a calm corner, or a crate if the dog is comfortable using one. A crate is optional, not a requirement. Make the retreat available by choice, and ask everyone in the household to leave the dog alone when it goes there—including not reaching in to pet it. A gate, pen, or closed room can help limit access to the rest of the home at first. Choose an option that fits your layout and can safely contain this dog.

Remove common hazards and gather essentials

Before arrival, secure cords, windows, and exterior doors; remove chewable hazards; and check that houseplants are safe for pets. Prepare familiar food if the rescue can provide or identify it, plus food and water bowls, a leash, a collar, and an ID tag. A dog bed can help establish a resting place. Decide in advance where the dog will eat and rest, which areas are off-limits, and which adults will supervise children and pet interactions. Keep the first days quiet rather than scheduling visitors to meet the dog.

Arrival and days one to three: keep the world small and predictable

Guide the dog into a controlled area

Use a leash when moving from the car to the toilet area and around the home. Offer a small, safe area to explore rather than opening every room at once. Keep exterior doors secure, and give the dog time to look around without being coaxed into every space.

Let the dog choose the pace of interaction

Keep greetings calm and limited. Allow the dog to observe and approach when ready; do not force handling, hugging, or introductions. Children should be supervised by an adult whenever they are near the new dog. Protect the retreat as a place the dog can leave activity and rest undisturbed.

Keep a simple routine

Make meals, toilet breaks, rest, and gentle activity occur on a predictable schedule. Ask the rescue or shelter how to maintain the dog’s familiar food and routine while it adjusts. Continue close supervision and house-training support even if the dog was reliably trained elsewhere: the new household, schedule, and signals are unfamiliar.

Start resident-pet introductions with separation

If you have other pets, begin with separate spaces and controlled, gradual introductions rather than immediate contact. Use a barrier or leash as appropriate to the animals and setting, and keep them apart whenever an adult cannot directly supervise. Allow the animals to become familiar at a pace their behavior supports; do not force proximity. The AKC’s guidance on introducing a new dog to a current dog discusses managed introductions and separation.

Built with durable PP wheels, stainless steel hardware, and an internal ball-bearing structure for smoother rolling than basic plastic wheels

Use the 3-3-3 idea only as a loose orientation

The often-mentioned “3-3-3” framework is a rough way to think about adjustment, not a study result, deadline, or forecast for a particular dog. Dogs vary, and the first week may not reveal how they will act once more comfortable. Follow this dog’s behavior rather than expecting a fixed timetable.

Days four to seven: expand gradually and review care

Offer more of the home only when it is going well

Keep the same quiet routine and retreat space. If the dog appears comfortable and you can supervise safely, allow access to another part of the home gradually. Continue using barriers where needed; do not treat a few calm days as a reason to remove every boundary at once.

Manage shared spaces and valuable items

Keep interactions with resident pets short and managed in line with their behavior. If there is competition or tension, feed animals separately and put away valuable items rather than asking them to share. If introductions are difficult or you cannot manage them safely, contact the rescue, a veterinarian, or a qualified behavior professional for individualized guidance.

Arrange veterinary follow-up

Review the dog’s health records and preventive-care needs with a veterinarian, and bring questions about health, diet, or behavior. If the dog shows persistent fear or distress, or behavior your household cannot safely manage, reach out to the rescue, veterinarian, or a qualified behavior professional. The AKC’s advice for bringing a dog home also recommends seeking behavior help when you are unsure how to address a problem.

Make decisions for this dog, not for a breed label

“Pit bull” is commonly used as a broad label for dogs of varied ancestry and appearance; it does not tell you how an individual dog will behave. The AVMA says individual history and behavior, rather than breed, influence whether a dog will bite. Pay attention to what the rescue knows, what you observe at home, and the dog’s particular needs. Ordinary responsible management—supervision, secure boundaries, gradual introductions, and professional help when needed—should be based on those specifics, not on a promise that any checklist makes a dog safe.

Quick first-week checklist

  • Ask about routine, food, health records, animal and child experience, and post-adoption support.
  • Set up a quiet retreat and agree that it will not be disturbed.
  • Secure household hazards and use a suitable barrier to limit access.
  • Keep the first days quiet; use a leash for moving around and maintain a predictable routine.
  • Supervise children and resident-pet interactions; start pet introductions with separation.
  • Continue house-training support, arrange veterinary follow-up, and seek individualized help if concerns arise.
