A Siberian Husky, Basenji, Shiba Inu, and Akita can differ in energy, preferred activities, and safety needs—and age, health, and individual temperament matter too. Plan for regular movement and mental engagement, then adapt the routine to the dog in front of you.
What counts as an ancient dog breed?
“Ancient dog breeds” does not have one universally agreed list. A 2021 peer-reviewed study examined Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, Basenjis, Samoyeds, and Siberian Huskies; the American Kennel Club (AKC) also describes the Shiba Inu as an ancient Japanese breed. These examples are useful, but they are not a definitive roster.
The 2021 study drew on 897 owner questionnaires from a Polish online sample and examined behavior in those five breeds. Its authors describe ancient breeds as active and boisterous, and as needing regular outdoor exercise; they also report independence and occasional reluctance to follow commands. This was an owner-reported behavior survey, not a trial testing exercise amounts or proving that more exercise prevents behavior problems. Read the study.
How much exercise should you plan?
Use breed tendencies as a starting point, not a stopwatch. The AKC says adult exercise needs vary with breed, health, and energy level, and the reviewed breed guidance does not establish a comparable daily-minute target across ancient breeds. A useful routine pairs regular physical activity with activities that engage the dog’s attention. AKC’s general exercise guidance lists walks, hiking, swimming when appropriate, play, obedience practice, and dog sports as possible outlets; it also emphasizes mental stimulation.

How activity needs and outlets differ by breed
| Breed example | Activity guidance | Safety and outlet considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Siberian Husky | AKC describes Siberians as active, athletic working dogs that need a lot of exercise. Daily walks or play groups may work in urban settings. | Keep the dog on leash, in a harness, or in a fenced yard: Huskies may run when given the opportunity. AKC Siberian Husky guidance. |
| Basenji | AKC describes Basenjis as energetic and active. Long play sessions and structured activities such as lure coursing, tracking, obedience, and agility can provide outlets. | Do not let a Basenji run loose; AKC cites the breed’s hunting instinct. AKC Basenji guidance. |
| Shiba Inu | AKC says Shibas enjoy walks and need committed daily exercise; another AKC article describes them as high-energy and needing substantial physical and mental stimulation. | Off-lead activity should be limited to a fenced or enclosed area. AKC Shiba Inu guidance and AKC guidance on Shibas and lifestyle fit. |
| Akita, Alaskan Malamute, and Samoyed | The 2021 survey included these breeds, but the sources reviewed do not provide a comparable daily duration or breed-by-breed exercise prescription. | Set the routine around the individual dog’s response and needs; the survey does not establish specific exercise or containment rules for these breeds. 2021 study. |
These examples do not support a precise ranking by exercise minutes. Within any breed, choose activities the dog can do comfortably and safely, and balance exertion with opportunities to use its brain.
How to adapt exercise for age and health
- Puppies: Use several short walks or play sessions rather than one very long outing while the puppy is growing.
- Adult dogs with health conditions: If a dog has hip dysplasia or heart or respiratory problems, ask a veterinarian to set an appropriate activity routine.
- Senior dogs: Adjust distance and intensity to what the dog can comfortably handle.
These are starting points, not substitutes for individual veterinary guidance. Watch how the dog handles the routine and adjust the activity to its comfort and condition.

How to make exercise both useful and safe
- Choose a physical outlet: Try walks, play, hiking, or swimming when appropriate. For a dog that enjoys structured work, consider obedience practice or a suitable dog sport.
- Add mental engagement: Include training or other structured activities rather than relying on physical exertion alone. Match the challenge to the dog and keep sessions manageable.
- Secure the setting: Use a leash or harness for controlled outings and a fenced or enclosed area for off-lead activity when the breed’s running or hunting instincts make open access unsafe. A leash supports control; it does not replace training or secure containment.
- Adjust to the individual: Change the duration, distance, or intensity according to age, health, comfort, and energy. Consult a veterinarian when a health condition affects what the dog can safely do.
