Give your new shelter pet one quiet, secure place to settle, keep the first days predictable, and let the animal set the pace for exploring and meeting people. Expand access as the pet shows comfort—not according to a deadline. Adjustment varies, so arrange veterinary follow-up and get individualized help if health, behavior, or safety concerns arise.
Before your shelter pet comes home
Ask the shelter or rescue what the animal has been eating, which routines it knows, what comforts it, and whether staff are aware of medical or behavior needs. That context can help you make the first days feel less unfamiliar.
Set up one quiet, secure home base rather than giving the pet immediate access to the whole home. Choose a room or other safe area where the animal can retreat without being trapped or pushed into interaction. Keep food and water available; cats also need a litter box. A bed, scratching post, perch, or simple toys may be useful depending on the pet.
Check the space and the rest of the home for hazards before arrival. Secure doors and windows, cords, toxic plants, and anything else the animal could reach or chew. Gates can help limit access to particular areas. For dogs, prepare a collar, leash, ID tag, bowls, and a sleeping and eating area.

Make the first days calm and predictable

Keep the routine steady
Use consistent times and familiar patterns for meals, rest, and necessary care where possible. There is no universal adjustment calendar. ASPCA’s “3-3-3” guideline describes a general pattern over early days, weeks, and months, but it is a rule of thumb—not a scientific guarantee, a required schedule, or a deadline. ASPCA also notes that some pets adjust quickly while others need more time. A pet’s pace may depend on the individual animal and its circumstances.
Plan for dogs, cats, and resident pets
Dogs
Have the collar, leash, ID tag, bowls, and a prepared resting and eating area ready. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends scheduling a veterinary examination as soon as possible after bringing a dog home and bringing available health and vaccination records. Ask the veterinarian about that dog’s specific medical needs.

Cats
Provide a litter box in the home base and let the cat choose when to venture farther. A scratching post or perch can add useful options, but a cat should retain a quiet place to retreat. If the litter box must be relocated, move it gradually rather than making an abrupt change.
Homes with other pets

Arrange veterinary follow-up after adoption and contact a veterinarian about health concerns or questions about the pet’s individual care.
