After a dog’s spay, keep the incision clean and dry, prevent licking, and limit activity for the period specified by the operating veterinarian. Check the site at least daily and contact the clinic promptly if it bleeds continuously, worsens, drains, smells foul, or opens. Your clinic’s discharge instructions take priority because recovery needs vary.

How do I care for the surgery site?

Keep the incision clean and dry. Do not bathe your dog or let her swim while the incision is healing unless the veterinarian says it is safe. Do not apply creams, ointments, disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or other products unless the clinic has specifically instructed you to do so. These substances can irritate or damage healing tissue.

Inspect an unbandaged incision regularly—at least once a day, and preferably twice daily. Check that the edges remain together and look for changes in redness, swelling, bleeding, or discharge. VCA’s incision-care guidance recommends checking at least twice daily.

What should the incision look like?

A healing incision should be clean, with its edges touching. Mild redness in the first few days or some bruising can occur, but the site should gradually look better rather than worse. Follow the clinic’s instructions about whether the incision should be covered; do not add a bandage unless directed.

Some general postoperative guidance notes that a small amount of intermittent seepage may occur for up to 24 hours, particularly after activity. That is not a reason to dismiss continuous bleeding, heavy drainage, or seepage that continues beyond that window. A spay incision should not have routine discharge, according to VCA’s spay guidance.

What should I do if my dog licks the wound or chews the stitches?

Stop her from reaching the incision: licking and chewing can damage the closure and introduce infection. Use the Elizabethan collar (cone) supplied by the clinic, or call to ask for one if you were not given one. A recovery garment may suit some dogs, depending on the incision and the dog’s ability to reach it. Ask the veterinary team which option is appropriate and make sure it actually prevents access; a garment is not a reliable substitute if your dog can still lick or chew the site.

How much activity should my dog have?

Keep outings brief and on leash for toileting. During the restricted period, prevent running, jumping, rough play, and strenuous exercise. Follow your clinic’s directions about stairs, furniture, and whether your dog needs a crate or a small, safe room. Keep her indoors overnight after she comes home, and do not bathe or allow swimming while the incision heals unless the veterinarian approves.

Published veterinary guidance gives different general timelines: VCA describes 5–10 days on its spay-specific page, 7–10 days for many procedures, and 7–14 days or at least one to two weeks in other postoperative guidance. For abdominal surgery such as a spay, one to two weeks of restriction is commonly described, but the operating veterinarian’s timeline is the one to follow. It can reflect the procedure and your dog’s individual recovery. See VCA’s post-operative instructions, spay overview, updated November 26, 2024, and guidance on exercise restriction.
