Before a foster dog arrives, confirm the dog’s care needs and the shelter’s support, make a secure resting area, remove hazards, and plan how to keep the dog separate from resident pets at first. Fostering is temporary care, but the daily work can range from routine meals and companionship to medication, appointments, activity restrictions, behavior notes, or adoption support. The right preparation depends on the individual dog and the organization placing them.
What does fostering a shelter dog involve?
A foster caregiver provides temporary in-home care while a dog waits for adoption, decompresses from the shelter, recovers from illness or surgery, or develops before adoption. The organization may ask you to handle ordinary care, give medication, attend scheduled appointments, follow activity limits, observe behavior, or help promote adoption. Foster duration and responsibilities vary by dog and program.
Support varies, too. The ASPCA’s general overview explains that foster programs differ; its New York City program, for example, says it provides food, equipment, supplies, and medical care. Ask the organization you are considering what it provides rather than assuming another program’s arrangements apply. What should I ask the shelter before accepting a placement?
Share your household schedule, experience, and constraints, then ask the coordinator to explain the dog’s known needs and the support available. A good match should account for the dog as well as your home, experience, resident animals, and availability.

How should I prepare my home for a foster dog?
1. Set up a safe indoor resting area
Choose a climate-controlled, dog-safe area that is easy to clean, secure against escape, and large enough for comfortable rest. A suitable closed room may be enough. A baby gate or exercise pen can create a barrier or contained space; a crate may suit some dogs when recommended and introduced positively. Consider available space, cleaning, the dog’s needs, and how closely you can supervise. Ask whether the organization supplies equipment before buying anything.
Keep cords, small chewable objects, valuables, and accessible food out of reach. Make the resting area calm and let the dog become comfortable there without using confinement as punishment.

2. Check the yard, doors, and escape routes
Inspect fences for gaps and loose boards. Remove access to poisonous plants, foxtails, and unsecured gardening supplies. Plan a secure route through entrances, and consider a second barrier near a frequently used door. Follow the shelter’s advice on leash, harness, and handling; a newly arrived dog may behave differently in an unfamiliar place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Agree on household rules and responsibilities
Decide who handles meals, potty breaks, walks, medication, and communication with the coordinator. Agree where the dog will rest, whether furniture is allowed, and which cues household members will use. Map out a realistic routine for meals, bathroom breaks, activity, play, and sleep, leaving room for medical instructions and the dog’s adjustment.
4. Make a plan for resident pets and children
Before arrival, identify spaces where the foster dog and resident animals can be kept apart. Check health precautions with the organization and your veterinarian. Make sure every household member can follow separation rules and care instructions. Children need an adult supervising their interactions; explain that the dog should be left alone while eating or sleeping, and that chasing, teasing, running near the dog, or taking toys and chews is not acceptable.

How can I help my foster dog adjust to my home?
Keep arrival quiet and predictable
Start with a potty break, then allow calm, leashed exploration of an appropriate area. Keep visitors and outings limited at first. Introduce the resting or confinement area in a positive way, and, if appropriate for the dog, practice brief periods of separation while someone is still home. A consistent routine can make the new environment easier to navigate, but each dog adjusts at a different pace.
Use management and enrichment suited to the dog
Follow the organization’s guidance on equipment and activity. If a crate is appropriate, HSSV recommends comfortable bedding, feeding in the crate, and short positive experiences so it does not only predict that the caregiver is leaving. A room, gate, or exercise pen may be a better fit for another dog or home.
Recommended Free Tools
Depending on the dog’s needs and the shelter’s approval, enrichment may include sniffing walks, simple nose-work games, food puzzles, approved chews, short positive-reinforcement sessions, and calm social time. Follow instructions about food, toys, and chews, especially if the dog has medical or dietary needs.

Expect behavior to change during the transition
Jumping, leash pulling, barking, house-training mistakes, or distress when left alone may appear in a new home; behaviors seen at the shelter may also lessen. ASPCApro cautions that early behavior is not necessarily a settled picture of a dog’s personality. Record what you observe, including progress and difficulties, and tell the foster coordinator so they can offer help or adjust the plan. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I introduce a foster dog to resident pets?
Keep animals separate at first and follow the placing organization’s health and introduction protocol. A visual introduction through a secure barrier can allow animals to notice one another without direct contact. Move at a pace that keeps everyone safe; do not force interaction.
Resident dogs
HSSV recommends an outdoor walk introduction for resident and foster dogs, putting away valued toys, chews, and food, and supervising every interaction. Do not leave the dogs together unattended. These are HSSV’s guide recommendations; ask your own organization for its protocol and adapt introductions to the dogs involved.

Resident cats
Provide a secure, dog-inaccessible space for the cat, and be prepared to maintain separation. HSSV notes that dogs in its shelter have not necessarily been tested with cats. For an initial visual and scent introduction, its guide recommends using a leash and gate so the animals cannot touch or chase, and rewarding calm behavior. A foster placement should not depend on the assumption that a dog is cat-safe when that has not been established.
Children
Keep an adult present during interactions. Give the dog space while eating or sleeping, and do not let children take toys or chews, chase or tease the dog, or run close by. If the dog seems uncomfortable, calmly increase distance and ask the coordinator for guidance.
Where can I find a foster program?
Contact shelters and rescue organizations in your area and ask about current eligibility, application steps, training, available placements, and caregiver support. ASPCA directs people outside its local program areas to seek foster opportunities through local shelters or rescues; its own program details should not be treated as universal.
