There is no dependable current national price for pyometra surgery in dogs. Published U.S. figures vary by provider setting, location, the dog’s condition, and what the fee includes. Historical study estimates range from hundreds to several thousand dollars, while Seattle Humane lists a much lower local program fee. Because pyometra can be life-threatening, seek veterinary assessment promptly rather than delaying care to compare prices.
How much does pyometra surgery cost for a dog?
Available figures are not directly interchangeable: they come from different years, provider settings, and fee schedules, and they do not establish a current national all-in average.
| Source and setting | Reported amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 study, as reported by dvm360: private practice | $600–$2,500 | Estimated cost for a medium-sized dog; historical study estimate, not a current quote. |
| 2020 study, as reported by dvm360: emergency practice | $1,500–$3,500 | Estimated cost for a medium-sized dog; historical study estimate, not a current quote. |
| 2022 study, as reported by dvm360: private practices | $1,000 median fee | Study-reported median for a medium-sized dog; not a universal or current price. |
| 2022 study, as reported by dvm360: surveyed community clinics | $200 median fee | Study-reported median; not a universal or current price. |
| Seattle Humane, Seattle-area fee schedule | $150–$350 | Listed fee for dog pyometra/dystocia surgery, reviewed October 7, 2026. This is a local program fee, not a nationwide all-in price; confirm the current fee and availability directly. |
dvm360 also describes anecdotal reports from clients in the greater New York region of $6,000–$10,000 at emergency providers and $2,000 or more at private practices. Those reports are regional anecdotes, not representative national data.
What does a pyometra surgery estimate include?
The usual surgical treatment is an ovariohysterectomy (OHE or OVH), which removes the uterus and ovaries. It can be more complicated than a routine spay. Depending on the dog’s condition, care may also involve IV fluids, antibiotics, stabilization, and closer monitoring. Risks such as sepsis, dehydration, shock, or anemia can mean more intensive treatment, as Cornell’s Canine Health Center explains.

- Anesthesia and surgery
- IV fluids and other stabilization
- Medications
- Hospitalization or outpatient monitoring
- Follow-up visits or rechecks
The AAVMC Spectrum of Care guide describes different outpatient and inpatient pathways, diagnostic work, supportive care, and monitoring. A lower estimate may reflect a different care plan or set of included services, not simply a lower charge for identical treatment.

Why do prices vary?
- Provider setting and location: Historical study figures differ for private practices, emergency practices, and community clinics; Seattle Humane’s schedule is a specific local example.
- The dog’s condition: A veterinarian determines whether the dog needs stabilization, supportive care, or more intensive monitoring.
- Diagnostics and care setting: Inpatient and outpatient plans can differ in tests, observation, monitoring, and follow-up.
- What the fee covers: A program fee, a study estimate, and a hospital bill may describe different packages. Ask what is included and what could add to the total.
When comparing estimates, focus on providers that can assess the dog within the timeframe the veterinarian considers safe. Ask whether tests, medications, hospitalization, and rechecks are included, and whether the amount could change if additional stabilization is needed. Let the veterinarian advise whether transfer or any delay is appropriate.
Where can I look for lower-cost care or payment help?
The AAVMC guide says that when a clinic’s surgery cost is beyond a client’s means, possible pathways can include referral for lower-cost surgery, a clinic’s “good Samaritan” fund, or internal or external payment plans. It also describes outpatient care for selected cases under veterinary judgment and monitoring; that is not a do-it-yourself or no-care alternative.

Can treatment wait, or can medicine replace surgery?
No price comparison should postpone prompt veterinary assessment. Cornell describes pyometra as a medical emergency and warns that untreated infection can be deadly. Contact a veterinary hospital if pyometra is suspected.
Medical management is not a simple, lower-cost substitute for surgery. Cornell says it is rarely considered and generally discouraged except in selected cases, such as a breeding dog. It is not viable for a critically ill dog or one with closed pyometra; it can take several days, may fail, and carries serious risks. AAVMC says medical management alone is not definitive and recurrence is likely without surgery. Only a veterinarian can assess whether it is appropriate for an individual dog.
