Even if your dog seems fine afterward, a fall into water can lead to dangerous lung problems hours later.
What to do right away
- Protect yourself first. Do not enter cold, moving, rough, or otherwise unsafe water, and do not step onto questionable ice. If feasible, reach from shore with a hooked pole or use a boat. Entering the water should be a last resort, and only if it is safe to do so. PetMD describes these rescue precautions.
- Remove your dog only if you can do so safely. A rescue attempt that puts you in danger can make the emergency worse. Veterinary Partner’s first-aid guidance also emphasizes safe removal.
- Check responsiveness and breathing. If your dog is unresponsive or not breathing normally, contact emergency veterinary services immediately and follow instructions from a trained first-aid responder or dispatcher. The American Red Cross advises checking the airway, breathing, and circulation and performing CPR as needed; follow trained instruction rather than improvising a technique.
- Dry and warm your dog gradually. Move them indoors or out of the cold, remove wet coverings, and dry their coat. Wrap them in warm blankets. You can place warm—not hot—water bottles around the body, wrapped in towels so they do not touch the skin directly. Do not use very hot water or direct high heat. Merck Veterinary Manual, the Red Cross, and AAHA recommend gentle warming.
- Get veterinary help promptly. Call an emergency veterinary hospital and arrange an immediate evaluation. Do not wait to see whether home warming is enough.
Why a dog that seems better still needs a vet
Near-drowning can injure the lungs, and complications such as pulmonary edema may develop hours after the incident. A dog may look improved after being pulled from the water and still become seriously ill later. Veterinary Partner recommends evaluation and observation after water immersion, and PetMD recommends immediate veterinary assessment after near-drowning. Saltwater ingestion can also cause salt poisoning, as PetMD notes.
Do not try to drain water from your dog’s lungs or rely on a folk remedy instead of veterinary care. Tell the clinic when the fall happened, how long your dog was in the water if known, whether they inhaled or swallowed water, and what changes you have noticed.
Signs of hypothermia to watch for
Cold-water exposure can cause hypothermia. Signs described by the Red Cross, Merck, and AAHA include:

- Shivering, weakness, or wobbliness
- Pale, blue, cool, or otherwise abnormal gums or skin
- Confusion, unusual lethargy, or reduced responsiveness
- Slow or shallow breathing, a slow heart rate, or a weak pulse
- Collapse or unconsciousness
Shivering alone is not a dependable measure of how serious the situation is; Merck cautions that it is not reliable by itself. The Red Cross says a temperature below 98.5°F indicates hypothermia and gives 99.5–102.5°F as a normal dog body-temperature range. These figures are not a reason to delay transport or to assume that a reading in the normal range rules out lung injury. Seek veterinary care based on the fall and your dog’s condition, not a home temperature check.

- Keep your dog leashed near frozen lakes and ponds; ice may not support their weight.
- Supervise your dog closely around open water and avoid unsupervised access to ice.
- Before walking near water in winter, know how to summon help and identify a safe way to reach a dog without entering unsafe water.
AAHA advises leashing dogs near frozen water, and PetMD urges close supervision around water and caution around thin ice.
