To slow blink at your cat, soften your gaze, slowly narrow or close your eyes, reopen them, and pause. Do it from a comfortable distance when your cat is settled and free to leave. Don’t stare, move closer, or reach out afterward; let your cat choose whether to respond or end the interaction.
How do I slow blink at my cat?
- Choose a relaxed moment. Try when your cat is settled and has an unobstructed way to move away. Don’t corner or restrain them.
- Keep your body still and your gaze indirect. Look slightly to the side rather than holding a direct stare. The University of Edinburgh’s feline body-language guide recommends indirect gaze and long slow blinks as friendly signals.
- Slowly narrow or close your eyes, then reopen them. Pause afterward. The research stimulus included eye closure, but its duration was a feature of the experiment—not a required timing rule for owners.
- Let the cat set the pace. If your cat stays relaxed, you can offer another gentle blink. Don’t repeat it rapidly, lean in, follow the cat, or reach toward them because they blinked back.
How can I tell whether my cat is comfortable?
Read the rest of your cat’s body language, not just the eyes. Cats Protection advises interpreting signals in context, and the University of Edinburgh notes that feline signals can be subtle and easy to misread.
- If your cat appears relaxed and remains nearby, you can leave the interaction open without approaching.
- If your cat seems tense, fearful, or unhappy, or moves away, stop looking at them and give them space.
- If your cat gives no response, simply let the moment pass. A slow blink is optional communication, not a test your cat needs to pass.
A slow blink does not guarantee that a cat feels comfortable, and it should not be used to try to calm a frightened cat or make a cat like someone. Cats Protection says the behavior’s meaning is not fully settled and that it may also occur under stress.
What does it mean when my cat slow blinks at me?
A peer-reviewed 2020 study in Scientific Reports found that cats showed half-blinks and eye narrowing more often in response to their owners’ slow-blink cues than when there was no interaction. In a second experiment, cats were more likely to approach an unfamiliar experimenter after a slow-blink interaction than after a neutral expression. The authors concluded that slow-blink sequences “may function as a form of positive emotional communication between cats and humans.”

That finding supports slow blinking as a potentially positive cue, but it does not show that every slow blink means affection or that every cat will respond. Consider the cat’s overall behavior and the situation rather than assigning one certain meaning to an eye movement.
Why doesn’t my cat slow blink back?
Some cats do not slow blink in response, and that absence is not evidence that they distrust you. Cats may show comfort in other ways, such as choosing to stay nearby or rubbing against you. Let your cat communicate on their own terms instead of repeating the cue to get a particular reaction.

When is blinking a reason to call the vet?
A deliberate, relaxed slow blink is different from repeated or persistent eye narrowing. Contact a veterinarian for excessive blinking or squinting, an eye that stays partly or fully closed, or a frequently visible third eyelid. Cats Protection lists these as reasons to seek veterinary advice; Cornell’s feline-health resource also identifies squinting and third-eyelid changes as possible signs of eye disease. Don’t use a slow-blink guide to diagnose an eye problem. The Animal Medical Center advises contacting a veterinarian if you’re worried your cat may be in pain.
