Dilated pupils can mean the room is dim, or that your cat is highly aroused by something—such as fear, play, or hunting. Neither cue tells you exactly how your cat feels on its own: check the light, the situation, and the rest of your cat’s body language. Persistent squinting or unusual blinking may signal discomfort and warrants veterinary advice.
What is the difference between a slow blink and dilated pupils?
| Cue | What you see | What it may suggest | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow blink | Your cat deliberately closes and reopens its eyes slowly. | Often accompanies calm social communication. It is not proof, by itself, that a cat loves or trusts a particular person. | Whether the cat’s posture and the interaction also look relaxed. |
| Dilated pupils | The dark centers of the eyes look larger. | They may simply be responding to low light. They can also accompany heightened arousal from fear, play, hunting, or other motivations. | Lighting, what is happening nearby, and the cat’s ears, whiskers, posture, tail, and movement. |
Veterinarian Hannah Hart describes slow blinking as positive emotional communication with people, and Cats Protection notes that a cat may slowly close its eyes to show that it feels relaxed. But blinking is not always friendly: rapid blinking or half-blinking can be associated with fear or pain, particularly during close interaction or clinical handling. Distinguish a deliberate, relaxed blink from repeated blinking or a tense expression. PetMD’s explanation of slow blinking and the 2022 AAFP/ISFM veterinary interaction guidelines describe these different contexts.
How to read dilated pupils in context
Start with the light
A cat’s pupils change size with available light. In a dim room, large pupils may be a normal response rather than a sign of distress. Before interpreting an emotional cause, consider whether the lighting changed or the cat has moved into a darker area. Cats Protection’s Behaviour Guide discusses both pupil size and lighting.
Look at the rest of the body
Large pupils provide more information about arousal than about whether an emotion is positive or negative. A cat may have dilated pupils while fearful, but also while focused on stalking or pouncing in play or hunting. A 2024 review of feline emotion assessment cautions against treating isolated cues as a reliable measure of a cat’s motivation or emotional state.

- Cues that can support a fear or defensive interpretation: ears held sideways or back, flattened whiskers, a tucked or wrapped tail, crouching, hiding, freezing, or trying to retreat.
- Cues that can fit play or hunting: focused attention on a target, stalking, or pouncing.
- Cues that can fit a calmer interaction: relaxed posture and half-closed eyes.
These are clues, not a diagnostic checklist: no one cue proves what a cat feels. For background on fear, aggression, play, and associated body language, see the Cornell Feline Health Center’s overview of feline aggression and the 2024 review of feline emotions during veterinary consultations.
Do not mistake stillness for comfort
A cat that freezes or appears compliant may be frightened rather than relaxed. If the cat looks tense or keeps trying to avoid contact, give it room to move away, reduce the stressor where possible, and do not force an interaction. A recent or extreme fear response can also have a medical contributor; VCA advises consulting a veterinarian about extreme or recent fear, since illness or pain may play a role.

When blinking or squinting may need veterinary advice
Repeated or excessive blinking, persistent squinting, or keeping one eye partly closed can indicate discomfort or an eye problem rather than a social signal. Contact a veterinarian if the change persists or comes with any of these signs:
- Redness or swelling
- Discharge or cloudiness
- Sensitivity to light
- Pawing at the eye
- An apparent change in vision
These signs do not identify a specific cause, but they shift the question from interpreting body language to checking your cat’s health. PetMD’s guide to cat blinking discusses abnormal blinking and eye-health concerns.
