What to Ask the Vet at Your Puppy Mill Rescue’s First Checkup

Bring every available record, explain what remains unknown, and leave with a vet-directed plan for your puppy’s exam, prevention, and follow-up.

At your puppy mill rescue’s first veterinary checkup, ask the vet to review the puppy’s history, explain the exam findings, and make an individualized plan for vaccines, parasite prevention, nutrition, development, and follow-up. Bring every record the rescue has—even if it is incomplete—and clearly distinguish documented history from what is unknown. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends scheduling an examination promptly for a new dog and bringing available vaccination and deworming history.

What records should I bring to my puppy’s first vet visit?

Ask the rescue for the puppy’s medical records and intake notes before the appointment. Bring them in whatever format is available; a folder or digital copies are fine. Include:

  • Vaccination dates and documentation, plus any known booster history
  • Deworming dates and products, if recorded
  • Medications, diagnoses, procedures, and test results
  • Microchip details and any paperwork about registration
  • Rescue intake notes and recent observations

Do not fill gaps by guessing. Tell the veterinarian which details are confirmed and which are unknown; that distinction helps the vet decide what to repeat, test, or schedule.

Write down what you have noticed since bringing the puppy home: food and appetite, stool, coughing or sneezing, itching, eye or ear discharge, mobility, sleep, fear responses, and behavior around handling or other animals. Call the clinic ahead of time, explain that the puppy came from a puppy-mill rescue, and ask how to transport it with as little stress as possible. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends discussing safe, low-stress travel with the veterinary team.

What should I ask the vet to check?

Ask for a thorough physical examination and a clear explanation of what needs attention first. AAHA’s puppy guidance includes assessment of body condition and systems such as the skin, eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal and urinary systems, nerves, bones, muscles, joints, and lymph nodes.

  • “Can you walk me through the exam findings and tell me what needs attention first?”
  • “Do you see concerns with body condition, skin, eyes, ears, mouth, breathing, heart, abdomen, joints, paws, or development?”
  • “Which signs mean I should call you urgently, and when should we recheck?”

A puppy-mill background makes it sensible to discuss a broad exam and any abnormalities, but it does not mean this puppy has a particular disease. Humane World for Animals describes health issues reported in puppy-mill dogs, including infectious disease, intestinal parasites, respiratory problems, skin and ear disorders, foot and leg injuries, congenital problems, eye issues, and poor body condition. These are reasons to assess the individual puppy, not a diagnosis.

Does my rescue puppy need vaccines?

Ask which vaccines are due based on the puppy’s age, exam, reliable records, location, and likely exposures. Confirm when boosters are needed and how local rabies requirements apply. State and local rules vary, so ask the veterinarian how they affect your puppy rather than assuming a general shelter schedule applies.

  • “Based on the puppy’s age and the records you consider reliable, which vaccines are due now?”
  • “What is the booster schedule, and what should I bring or watch for at each visit?”
  • “Which vaccines are core, and do geography, lifestyle, or exposure make additional vaccines appropriate?”
  • “What local rabies requirements apply?”

AAHA’s vaccination guidance discusses different considerations in shelter settings, but shelter protocols are not automatically an individual post-adoption schedule. The veterinarian should adapt recommendations to this puppy and the rules in your jurisdiction.

Should the vet test for parasites or recommend prevention?

Ask whether the puppy needs a stool test or other parasite checks, what deworming or ongoing prevention is appropriate, and when to repeat it. Intestinal parasites are common in puppies, and some can spread to people; tell the veterinary team if children, older adults, immunocompromised people, or other pets live in the home.

  • “Should we test a stool sample or check for other parasites?”
  • “What deworming or year-round prevention is appropriate, and when should it be repeated?”
  • “How should we handle stool and clean the puppy’s living area to reduce risk at home?”

AAHA recommends discussing parasite and zoonosis prevention. Humane World for Animals also identifies parasites and zoonotic organisms among concerns associated with puppy-mill conditions. The right testing and prevention plan depends on the puppy’s history, health, and local risks.

What should I ask about food, growth, and weight?

Ask whether the current food suits the puppy’s age, expected adult size, and condition, and get specific feeding guidance. Avoid starting supplements or making a major food change without discussing it with the veterinary team.

  • “Is this food appropriate for the puppy’s age, breed or expected size, and current condition?”
  • “How much and how often should I feed, and should I change food gradually?”
  • “What weight or growth pattern should we monitor?”
  • “Does the puppy need any supplements?”

AAHA recommends discussing food choice, supplements, feeding schedules, water, and a healthy weight range with the veterinary team.

What should I ask about behavior, dental care, and socialization?

Tell the vet about fear, difficulty being handled, crate or house-training concerns, and interactions with people or animals. Ask what steps are appropriate now and how to socialize the puppy safely in light of its vaccination and exposure status.

  • “Are the fear, handling, crate, house-training, or interaction behaviors I’ve noticed worth addressing now?”
  • “What safe socialization steps fit the puppy’s vaccination and exposure status?”
  • “How are the teeth, gums, and bite developing, and which chews are safe?”

Ask for an oral examination and advice on safe chew toys. Mention any household members at higher risk from infection so the clinic can tailor prevention advice.

Should I ask about the microchip and sterilization?

Ask the veterinary team to scan the puppy’s microchip, confirm that it reads, and help verify the number and registry contact details. If the puppy is not sterilized, discuss timing based on its sex, health, and expected adult size. AAHA advises checking the chip and individualizing sterilization timing rather than relying on one age for every puppy.

  • “Can you scan the chip and confirm the number and registry contact details?”
  • “If the puppy is not sterilized, what timing fits its sex, expected adult size, and health?”

What follow-up should I leave with?

Before you go, make sure you understand the next steps and know whom to contact with concerns. Ask the veterinarian to identify the most important findings, explain any tests or treatments being recommended, and set the timing for rechecks, boosters, or repeat parasite testing. The plan should reflect the puppy’s age, exam, documented history, unknowns, household, location, and exposure—not an assumption that every mill rescue needs the same care.

Humane World for Animals’ report describes individual rescue cases, not the prevalence of illness among all puppy-mill dogs. For example, it recounts 114 dogs rescued from a suspected North Carolina puppy mill in May 2023, with thin or emaciated dogs and apparent skin, matting, and eye concerns. It also describes more than 250 dogs and puppies rescued from two Oklahoma puppy mills in March 2024, where veterinarians reported issues including skin infections, eye problems, dental disease, and nasal discharge. These cases illustrate why an exam and follow-up matter; they do not predict what your puppy will have.
