They may add a protective layer, but available evidence does not show that coyote or spiked dog vests reliably prevent hawk attacks or injuries. Product makers describe puncture-resistant materials and, in one hawk-focused design, a detachable shield intended to resist talons. Those are design claims—not proof of performance in hawk attacks. Keep a small dog under direct supervision outdoors; a vest is not a substitute for it.
What a vest may—and may not—do against a hawk
A puncture-resistant panel could provide a barrier over the parts of a dog it covers. A hawk-focused shield is designed to add coverage against talon strikes. But the available product information does not establish how well either design performs in real attacks, whether it prevents injury, or whether spikes deter a hawk. There is no supported effectiveness rate to use for these products.
CoyoteVest describes its CoyoteVest as puncture-resistant gear intended to slow or help prevent surprise attacks, with protective panels and a reinforced collar. Its FAQ says the CoyoteVest and SpikeVest are stab-resistant and intended to help protect against coyotes, aggressive dogs, and birds of prey. The company says the vest was tested by a police department K9 unit and pressure tested; the page does not establish that these tests measured protection from hawk attacks. CoyoteVest product information and the company FAQ describe the maker’s claims, not an independent evaluation.

The company describes the HawkShield’s purpose as “to reduce the chance of being stabbed in the back by a raptor.” That explains the intended use; it does not establish that the shield prevents punctures or injuries. Read the manufacturer’s HawkShield description.

What to consider before choosing one
- Coverage: Check which areas the vest and any included shield cover. A protective panel cannot protect areas it does not cover.
- Fit and mobility: Choose a fit that stays in place without restricting your dog’s movement. Confirm sizing and fastening details with the manufacturer.
- Included components: Check whether a HawkShield is included or sold separately, and whether deterrent accessories are optional.
- Evidence behind claims: Distinguish a maker’s description or test claim from independent evidence that measures hawk-attack outcomes.
Do not assume that spikes alone will deter a hawk, or that a vest makes unsupervised time outdoors safe.

Keep a small dog close and watch it directly while it is outside. Consider the wildlife circumstances where you live when deciding how to manage outdoor time.
