If the puppy is too young to eat solid food, offer a commercial canine puppy milk replacer—not cow’s or goat’s milk—and contact a veterinarian promptly for advice tailored to the puppy’s age, weight, condition, and ability to suckle. If the puppy is weak or cannot suck, don’t force liquid into its mouth; seek veterinary help with safe feeding.
Choose food for the puppy’s stage
Before weaning: canine puppy milk replacer
For an orphaned puppy that is not yet eating solid food, use a commercial puppy milk replacer made for dogs. VCA explains that canine milk differs nutritionally from cow’s milk and describes cow’s and goat’s milk as inadequate substitutes. Its guide to feeding orphaned puppies, credited to the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition, recommends commercial replacer over cow’s milk and homemade mixtures.
Call a veterinarian as soon as you can to confirm the appropriate product and feeding plan. A found puppy’s age, weight, temperature, hydration, and ability to swallow are not known from appearance alone, and general feeding guidance cannot assess those factors.
During weaning: introduce puppy food gradually
Weaning generally begins around three to four weeks of age. At that stage, gradually offer complete puppy food formulated for growth, softened with puppy replacer or warm water into a soupy gruel. Start with small amounts and increase gradually as the puppy learns to eat. Continue replacer during the transition rather than abruptly replacing it with solids. VCA describes completing the transition by five to six weeks, while ASPCA says weaning ideally finishes by seven to eight weeks; follow veterinary advice for the individual puppy.

Feed carefully while arranging veterinary help
Use a bottle only if the puppy can suckle
If the puppy is alert and able to suck, use an appropriate puppy nursing bottle and follow the replacer’s preparation and feeding directions. The nipple must not let liquid flow too quickly: VCA warns that rapid flow can lead to aspiration, pneumonia, or death. Never squeeze liquid into the puppy’s mouth or force-feed it.
A puppy too weak to suckle may need another feeding method and veterinary assistance. Do not attempt tube feeding unless a veterinarian has trained and directed you to do so. If the puppy cannot suck or swallow safely, prioritize urgent veterinary guidance over trying to feed it at home.

Follow the product directions for timing and temperature
VCA gives a general schedule of feeding every two to four hours during the first week, then every four to six hours until weaning. These are general intervals, not an individualized prescription; the puppy’s needs and the replacer’s label matter. Ask a veterinarian to confirm the schedule rather than estimating a volume from a general chart.

Treat these as general source guidance, not a universal target for every puppy. A hypothermic puppy may not eat well, so a cold or unresponsive puppy needs veterinary advice rather than repeated feeding attempts.
Keep equipment and prepared replacer clean
VCA advises cleaning and boiling bottles and nipples to sterilize them between uses, refrigerating prepared replacer, and discarding formula left at room temperature for more than one hour. Prepare and store replacer according to its package directions as well.

Why not calculate a feed from a general chart?
VCA publishes general reference figures for neonatal orphaned puppies, including approximately 180 mL of total daily fluid per kilogram of body weight and age-based energy estimates. Those figures are not an individual feeding prescription: a puppy’s weight, age, health, and intake need to be assessed, and the replacer’s instructions also apply. Ask a veterinarian for the amount to offer rather than converting a broad reference into a bottle volume for a puppy whose condition is unknown.
Arrange veterinary assessment promptly
Contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service promptly, even if the puppy accepts replacer. The cited veterinary guidance recommends professional input on replacer and feeding but does not establish a universal safe waiting period for an abandoned puppy. Seek urgent help if the puppy is too weak to suck, cannot swallow, or seems cold or unresponsive; do not delay care to keep attempting feeds.

If the puppy remains in your care, ask the veterinarian to demonstrate gentle stimulation to help it urinate and defecate after feeding. VCA notes that puppies generally cannot eliminate on their own until about three weeks old, but the appropriate care depends on age and condition.
