Can Dogs and Cats Become Friends? How to Introduce Them Safely

Dogs and cats may become friends, but calm coexistence is a good outcome too. Use gradual introductions, safe escape routes, and supervision at every stage.

Yes—dogs and cats can learn to live calmly together, and some become close companions. But friendship is not guaranteed, and peaceful acceptance is a perfectly good outcome. Introduce them gradually, keep every meeting supervised, and give the cat a safe way to retreat and reach its essentials without passing the dog.

What affects whether a dog and cat can get along?

The dog’s history and behavior matter: a dog that can settle and disengage from the cat is a better candidate for gradual introductions than one that fixates or chases. The cat also needs to feel safe, with escape routes and access to food, water, litter, and resting places.

There is no source-backed method that guarantees friendship. Aim first for calm coexistence rather than expecting the pets to play or become close. A moving cat may trigger chasing; VCA Animal Hospitals warns that dogs with a history of chasing and catching small game may never be safe around cats, and a chase can fatally injure a cat. VCA’s dog-moving guidance was last updated February 14, 2024.

How do I introduce my dog to my cat?

Move at the pace of the animals’ behavior, not a calendar. If either pet becomes distressed or overexcited, increase distance or return to an earlier stage. Do not force an approach or punish either animal for reacting.

1. Set up separate safe spaces

Give the cat a dog-free room with food, water, litter, and resting places that are accessible without passing the dog. Add elevated perches or other places to retreat. If the cat is new, settle it in this room while the dog becomes familiar with its scent. If the cat already lives in the home, maintain its safe area as the dog acclimates to the cat’s odor.

2. Begin with a secure barrier

Use a baby gate, screen, or another barrier the cat cannot scale. Let the pets see and notice one another only while both can remain calm; make sure the cat can retreat and the dog can move away. You can pair the other pet’s presence with food at a comfortable distance. If either cannot eat or settle, increase the distance and make the step easier.

3. Try brief, supervised meetings

When the pets can remain neutral at the barrier—with no lunging or hissing—try a short meeting in an open room. Keep the dog on a loose lead, actively supervise, and reward calm behavior. End the session before either animal becomes distressed or overexcited. Never hold the cat in place or make it approach.

4. Keep resources separate and continue supervision

Feed the animals separately, and keep the cat’s food, water, litter, and resting places out of the dog’s reach. Continue using barriers or rotating access to rooms as needed. A calm meeting does not show that the pets are safe together without supervision.

How long does it take for a dog and cat to get along?

There is no established universal timeline for dog-cat introductions. Some animals may settle sooner than others; progress according to whether both can stay calm at each stage, not according to a set number of days or weeks. The available guidance does not establish an average introduction duration or success rate.

What signs mean I should pause?

Pause, increase distance, or return to a previous stage if either pet becomes highly aroused, lunges, hisses, or cannot settle. A cat showing fear may flatten its ears, hiss, bare its teeth, crouch low, tuck its tail, or raise its fur. VCA also identifies stiff posture and prolonged staring as signs a dog may be uncomfortable during an introduction. These behaviors are signals to give the animals space; on their own, they do not diagnose a behavioral disorder.

Do not punish or force the pets through a frightening encounter. Cornell Feline Health Center cautions that physical punishment can increase fear or anxiety and worsen aggression. If a cat is aggressive, Cornell’s feline aggression guidance recommends veterinary assessment because pain or disease can contribute to behavior.

Can I leave my dog and cat alone together?

Keep them apart whenever no one can actively supervise until you are confident they are safe together. Use a closed door, secure barrier, or room rotation rather than relying on a successful short meeting as proof of safety. International Cat Care specifically advises never leaving a dog and kitten alone together until their safety together is established in its 2024 booklet, Caring for your new kitten.

Why does my dog chase my cat?

A moving cat can trigger a dog’s chasing behavior. If your dog cannot stay settled or disengage, do not continue direct contact: maintain separation and seek individualized professional advice. Chasing and catching small animals is a serious safety risk, and some dogs may never be safe around cats.

When should I get professional help?

Talk with a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist if aggression persists, either pet appears highly fearful, or chasing makes contact unsafe. A veterinarian can check whether a health issue is contributing to behavior and advise on further support. Gradual exposure is appropriate only when you can manage the pets safely at each stage.
