What to feed a stray puppy before a vet visit depends on whether it still needs milk or can eat solid food. For an unweaned puppy, use commercial puppy milk replacer—not cow’s or goat’s milk. If it can eat solids, offer food formulated for puppies; soften it with warm water if it is weaning. Contact a veterinarian or local shelter promptly to arrange an exam and ask for feeding guidance.
Choose food by the puppy’s stage
A stray puppy’s age may be uncertain, so do not assume that one feeding option is right for every puppy. Use what it can safely eat as a guide, and ask a veterinarian to assess it.

If the puppy is still weaning
Weaning generally begins around three to four weeks of age and is ideally complete by seven to eight weeks, according to the ASPCA. These are general care ranges, not a way to determine a stray puppy’s age. Puppy food softened with warm water or milk replacer can help with the transition. Ask a veterinarian for advice if you are unsure whether the puppy is ready for solids (ASPCA, Dog Nutrition Tips).
Feed cautiously—and do not force it
Very young puppies can aspirate liquid if they are fed too quickly or positioned poorly. A cold or weak puppy may not feed safely; warm it and seek veterinary advice rather than forcing food or liquid. Do not attempt tube feeding unless a veterinarian has trained you. VCA advises that a veterinarian can demonstrate alternative methods if a puppy is too weak to suckle (VCA, Caring for Orphaned Puppies; VCA, Feeding Orphaned Puppies).

- Call a veterinarian or local shelter. Explain that you found a stray puppy and arrange an exam promptly. Ask what to feed and how to feed it until it can be seen.
- Keep handling calm and cautious. A frightened or injured puppy may bite or be unsafe to approach. If you cannot safely contain it, contact animal control rather than risking injury (VCA, What Should You Do if You Find a Stray Dog or Cat?).
- Seek emergency care for severe symptoms. Choking, severe trauma, heatstroke, or suspected poisoning warrant emergency veterinary help (ASPCA, Emergency Care for Your Pet).
Until a veterinarian assesses the puppy, keep it away from dogs of unknown vaccination status. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises this precaution until a puppy has completed its vaccine series (Merck Veterinary Manual, Puppy Care; last updated July 2025).
